The startling story precludes the reality that police envision themselves as a protected class in society – to shoot first and ask questions later – even when off-duty.

Source: Trooper Kissenger Barreau Did Not Identify Self Before Shooting at Doorbell-Ringing Teens

By JENNIFER DERICKS

July 28, 2015 at 12:31 PM

SPARTA, NJ – The mother of one of the boys involved in a shooting incident by an off-duty state trooper recounted the story on Tuesday. The trooper was allegedly shooting at a car occupied by teens who mistakenly went to his home.

<SNIP>

Lindsay Marasco said the three boys drove to Whispering Winds off of Sterling Hill Road to drop off Matthew Mayer at a friend’s house.

“After knocking on the door, they heard the loud voice from inside saying ‘I don’t know who the f*** you are, get off my f***ing property'," Marasco said. "They didn’t recognize the voice so they ran away. They ran to their car. Because it was in a cul-de-sac they had no choice but to drive past the house to get out. The man was in the street pointing his gun at them. They were scared and just wanted to get out of there. Then he shot his gun at them.”

She said the state trooper, Kissenger Barreau, did not identify himself as a police officer to the boys. This was confirmed by one of the other boys involved. His attorney has advised him not to discuss details at this time.

https://www.tapinto.net/towns/sparta/articles/source-trooper-kissenger-barreau-did-not-identif

Also in the article - the mother told her son to call 911 and he did. Instead of getting help for being shot at by an unidentified man they were arrested.

Why would Barreau think he had the right to shoot at people who had knocked on his door then left when he told them to get off his property?

Hopefully the cop will be arrested or at least fired for misusing his gun. Shooting at someone for knocking on your door is completely insane.

This kind of thing has happened too often.
retraining of all law enforcement has to happen NOW
not next week, now!
even i know that de-escalation is step one, lesson one in any law enforcement situation. That this continues to happen nation wide, should be a giant red flag, hitting people right in the face.
these cops reach for their gun in any situation now, and they need to be retaught that the gun is the last possible answer

visions of cops always really good. Guys like this need to be weeded out promptly. The problem is, often their superiors are just as bad and there is a permissive environment for bad behavior.

Yoshihiro Hattori was a Japanese exchange student residing in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, United States, at the time of his death. Hattori was on his way to a Halloween party and went to the wrong house by accident. The property owner, Rodney Peairs, shot and killed Hattori, thinking he was trespassing with criminal intent. The controversial homicide, and Peairs's subsequent acquittal in the state court of Louisiana, received worldwide attention.

Non-white kid, white homeowner, kid dead, homeowner acquitted. That guy should have been sent to prison for the rest of his life.

As it is, the kid's parents won a civil suit and were awarded $650,000 of which they have been paid $100,000 by an insurance company.

More detailed article -- no contradictions, just more detail of the insanity:

http://www.nj.com/sussex-county/index.ssf/2015/07/teen_off-duty_trooper_fired_at_us_but_we_were_trea.html

and I love the last line:

Calls to a number listed for the trooper's home have not yet been returned, and no one answered a knock on the home's door Wednesday.

Was it a friendly knock or a life-threatening knock?

Probably life-threatening. Otherwise, he wouldn't have opened the door, chased them down, and then opened-fire to keep those kids from finding the house they were looking for.

The only way to stop a bad teenager with a life-threatening door knock is a good guy with a gun.

“One round struck a front wheel of the vehicle, prompting the teens to pull over a short distance away. One of the teens called his mother and then 911."

Can you imagine how scared they must have been? They had to call 911 to save them from a cop. And the guy is still on active duty!
