(reposted to correct forum)
In NH, Maine, IA and several places in between, Trump is on the move. No matter the public outcry over his comments. No matter the almost daily announcements of lost business partnerships. No matter that he has now double- and tripled-down on his original comments that called most Mexicans drug dealers and rapists. His poll numbers with Republican voters keeps going up.
The gOP has, as a group, not only refused to condemn Trump but has spent most of the time since his original comments defending them and/or supporting them. It has been a wonder to behold.
Nothing has highlighted and underscored the racism, xenophobia, homophobia and sexism that is intrinsically woven into the fabric of the Republican Party than the last several weeks.
There can be little doubt where, as a group, as a Party, they stand on these issues.
Trump is not a anomaly. He is not some vestigial appendage of the larger gOP body. Why are his poll numbers rising? Why does he now have a better chance than ever of being the Republican nominee? Because he says the things they want said. He embodies their highest ideals. He and they are racist, xenophobic narcissists and I assume some, are good people.

(146,284 posts)some Republicans are. That anyone would select Donald Trump for anything is completely incredible. I can't imagine how anyone could vote for that doltish excuse for a human being.

(146,284 posts)I don't think he really is, either, despite the polling numbers. He will be gone after the first few primaries. He's in it for the publicity, for reasons known only to him.
He's a certifiable wacko, though.

(13,184 posts)I know Jeb Bush has rejected Trump's views.
And at least one other candidate that I know of, though I can't remember which one.
Not all Republicans are batshit crazy racists, but Trump sure appeals to that GOP constituency.

(33,688 posts)- though I can't think of any who aren't at least politely racist - all the batshit crazy racists are unquestionably Repukes.

(8,419 posts)The batshit crazy maybe 20% but that tells over 50% are racist.
Tyrone: 27%.
John: ... you said that immmediately, and with some authority.
Tyrone: Obama vs. Alan Keyes. Keyes was from out of state, so you can eliminate any established political base; both candidates were black, so you can factor out racism; and Keyes was plainly, obviously, completely crazy. Batshit crazy. Head-trauma crazy. But 27% of the population of Illinois voted for him. They put party identification, personal prejudice, whatever ahead of rational judgement. Hell, even like 5% of Democrats voted for him. That's crazy behaviour. I think you have to assume a 27% Crazification Factor in any population.

They have a problem. Maybe they think since Bernie isn't going to go negative, they can get by with just about anything. But it doesn't really work that way. Like tug of war, one side lets go and all the fun is over...at least for those who hung on.

(1,016 posts)Recognize your market, demographics, culture, language, then run a message that appeals to them. Appeals to the GOP hard core base. The base that votes in primaries, will go door to door, donate small amounts of money, but it adds up.

(5,178 posts)You get a wealth crazed madman out front to rant and push the envelope of what can be deemed acceptable by society at large.
Then those that file in behind them seem almost reasonable in retrospect.
And the overall trajectory of both parties and people continue the small slants rightward each cycle until dyed in the wool Republicans from 1972 seem almost like radical leftists.
