Skechers To Pay $40 Million To Settle FTC Claims It Lied About Shape Ups

The government wants you to know that simply sporting a pair of Skechers' fitness shoes is not going to get you Kim Kardashian's curves or Brooke Burke's toned tush.

Skechers USA Inc. will pay $40 million to settle charges by the Federal Trade Commission that the footwear company made unfounded claims that its Shape-ups shoes would help people lose weight and strengthen their butt, leg and stomach muscles. Kardashian, Burke and other celebrities endorsed the shoes in Skechers ads.

The settlement, announced Wednesday, also involves the company's Resistance Runner, Toners, and Tone-ups shoes. Skechers made deceptive claims about those shoes, too, says the agency.

Consumers who bought the shoes will be eligible for refunds.

The commission settled similar charges with Reebok last year over its EasyTone walking shoes and RunTone running shoes. That $25 million agreement also provided customer refunds.

The FTC gets $40 million, and if you can prove your bought the sneakers you get your money back.

That seems fair........

They are deceptive. They can cause more harm than good.

5. I bought a pair and returned them after about a week.

I felt like a real sucker for falling for the hype. The store didn't bat an eyelash when I returned them.

7. I love my Skechers shoes, might be a good time to buy more and put them away.

I had a knee problem that would not go away.

After wearing my Skechers for just few hours, the pain was gone and never came back.

I noticed that the shoes make you walk correctly.

I love my Skechers, that is all I wear now.

It does take a few days to get used to them, but now I wear nothing else.

16. They helped me, too..

since I tend to supinate when I walk or run and I can't do that when I wear shape-ups. I think you can get the same result from an orthopedic shoe, but they're a lot more expensive.

21. You are right.

This is what my Dr. said.

She was the one to suggest I try them, I wished I had found her sooner.

I think it is the rocking movement and balance problem some people might have with the shoe.

It was weird walking on them for the first time, it seemed like walking downhill.

After a few days I didn't notice it anymore.

Maybe the shoe isn't meant for everybody.

I love my shoes.

8. People actually bought into the idea that shoes help you lose weight and strengthen leg muscles?

Not just leg muscles, but your abs as well?

WOW!

People are gullible.

18. Well, I have the competition's shoes because they're very, very comfortable

I didn't buy them for the claims of toning, but for the thick soles, which are very comfortable on the weird arthritis I have in my feet. So comfortable I have five or six pairs! I do have well-developed leg muscles ... but not because of my shoes

11. My knee was hurting so bad, I thought I would have to live with it.

I also had a injured ankle that healed after wearing the shoes.

It is a little strange at first wearing the shoes with the rocking motion but you get used to it.

I will buy some shoes and put them away.

I have a hard foot to fit, I need good arch support.

Someone would have to pry my shoes out of my cold dead hands first.

12. I love mine

but then I didn't expect them to alter my bone structure and give me liposuction, either. They did wonders for my calf muscles.

13. I noticed that after even a short walk, my leg muscles are stronger.

You still have to eat right to loose weight, exercise is just one part of it.

I think there are a lot of people who love these shoes.

I have to walk on concrete a lot at work, my feet do not feel tired at all after work.

I think a lot of people just don't like the rocking motion of the shoes.

It takes time to get your balance right.

14. I have a pair

And will not be buying another one. I can wear them for short periods of time and that's about it.

When I need sneakers for long periods of time, I go with my Nikes.

ETA I think I paid about $40 for them at the outlet. I have other Skechers and I like them a lot better.
