MINNEAPOLIS (The Borowitz Report)Many Americans are tired of explaining things to idiots, particularly when the things in question are so painfully obvious, a new poll indicates.
According to the poll, conducted by the University of Minnesotas Opinion Research Institute, while millions have been vexed for some time by their failure to explain incredibly basic information to dolts, that frustration has now reached a breaking point.
Of the many obvious things that people are sick and tired of trying to get through the skulls of stupid people, the fact that climate change will cause catastrophic habitat destruction and devastating extinctions tops the list, with a majority saying that they will no longer bother trying to explain this to cretins.

So true, I spent most of my morning doing this, looking up links to prove the idiots wrong.

(2,331 posts)I've found it much harder since, although I cut back on performing stand up about 10 years ago for other reasons.
I admire those who still do it, because I think the immediacy of the internet makes topical humor much harder to keep topical.

(2,331 posts)However it gets to a point where reality becomes so absurd that you can't top it. Also you become so saturated with ridiculous things that it desensitizes you. There's a real art to taking this kind of material and putting a fresh spin on it, and doing it every day as people like Borowitz and late night monologue writers and comics like John Fugelsang do without getting burned out. Jon Stewart is probably very burned out even though he doesn't let it show. I don't have cable now so haven't watched his successor but based on his thin resume I anticipate a real drop off in quality in that chair.

(14,177 posts)that was a hoot. And yes they have gotten so absurd they can't be topped. That is why I quote them and see the look of shock on people's face it's I won't say funny cuz they look traumatized, then I say that's a direct quote from Todd Akin or Louie Gohmert or something Rush Limbaugh said and they are like whew you scared me for a minute, yeah that guy is an ass. It is getting old it's been old since the early 80's I didn't think they could get worse, yet somehow they did.

(2,331 posts)But someone I think did Palin even better is named Sara Benincasa. Look up her videos from that time. Because they were online she could take it even further than Fey. There are a dozen or so and they're all excellent. Check them out and let me know if you like them.

(14,177 posts)I think it's because she looks a lot like my sister, plus she is dead on I saw a small clip of Sarah on her cable channel and she acted exactly like that. The last one was the scariest when she acted smart at first I was like wtf, this isn't right. Then she got back to normal and well that is kind of scarier because Sarah has that acting human thing down almost pat except I can see through her shtick.

This spoof is the funniest by far though

(2,331 posts)I think it helps validate what I said earlier. In her case there's no parody like inadvertent self parody!
And I can see why you find Sara Benincasa scary especially in the last vlog

(34,136 posts)Bush: 'Our Long National Nightmare Of Peace And Prosperity Is Finally Over'
NEWS

VOL 43 ISSUE 01
WASHINGTON, DCMere days from assuming the presidency and closing the door on eight years of Bill Clinton, president-elect George W. Bush assured the nation in a televised address Tuesday that "our long national nightmare of peace and prosperity is finally over."
President-elect Bush vows that "together, we can put the triumphs of the recent past behind us."
"My fellow Americans," Bush said, "at long last, we have reached the end of the dark period in American history that will come to be known as the Clinton Era, eight long years characterized by unprecedented economic expansion, a sharp decrease in crime, and sustained peace overseas. The time has come to put all of that behind us."
Bush swore to do "everything in [his] power" to undo the damage wrought by Clinton's two terms in office, including selling off the national parks to developers, going into massive debt to develop expensive and impractical weapons technologies, and passing sweeping budget cuts that drive the mentally ill out of hospitals and onto the street.
During the 40-minute speech, Bush also promised to bring an end to the severe war drought that plagued the nation under Clinton, assuring citizens that the U.S. will engage in at least one Gulf War-level armed conflict in the next four years.

It's terrifying to look back and see that everything they satirized in the article came true.

(14,177 posts)I have read too many Onion articles to count that seemed more honest than anything in mainstream media. Some so close to true I couldn't even laugh properly it was more like whistling past the graveyard than an actual laugh.

I just have to remember that 50% of the population has below average intelligence.
