Scott Walker Recall: Obama Campaign Gets Involved

<snip>

WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama's re-election campaign is jumping into the Wisconsin recall, focusing on educating and registering voters in advance of the June 5 election.

Tripp Wellde, the Wisconsin state director for the Obama campaign, sent an email to supporters on Thursday night to get them fired up to support Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett, the Democratic nominee looking to unseat Gov. Scott Walker (R). From Wellde's email:

The next election here in Wisconsin is coming up on June 5th -- and it's important to make sure your voice is heard.

For the last year and a half, Governor Walker has divided Wisconsin -- siding with big corporations and the super-rich at the expense of working, middle-class families. He's broken our trust in state government: Too many Wisconsin families are out of work, students face crowded classrooms, and working men and women will be hurt by cuts to health care funding.

We can do better. Together, we'll work to elect Tom Barrett, who will stand up for all Wisconsinites as governor -- and that starts with getting the word out now about what's at stake on June 5th.

Wellde also issued a statement on Tuesday, after Barrett's victory in the Democratic primary, saying, "President Obama is proud to stand with Tom Barrett and the hundreds of thousands of Wisconsin families who are coming together to move Wisconsin forward."

3. This is the right time, right focus. A year ago I was good with BHO staying out of it....

... we wanted to keep it a People vs Walker fight, not Obama vs. Walker. Or worse, Obama and Big Unions vs Walker.

Focusing on voter education and registration is also perfect, both politically and practically.

30. i agree with you....

we had sort of the same situation here in northern il. during our primary the state dems did`t bother to field a candidate for the new illinois 16th congressional seat. so we decided to find someone to run and after a "peoples conference" wanda rohl was selected by the "people " during a meeting in dekalb il. all this was done on facebook. with in this last week the state democratic party has decided to back her. which means she`ll go from 0 dollars to maybe enough to actually campaign in a district the size of a small state. we took your methods in wisconsin and forced the establishment to listen and now they`ll supply what we lack.

i always thought the whitehouse should stay out of wisconsin and come in on the voter laws where they have the power to effect change.

5. I get this sinking feeling about all of this.

Not that the Obama campaign is getting involved. That's great, and will help them get good ground organization in Wisconsin all set for the presidential campaign.

But if they do manage to pry Scott Walker free in June, he'll be available for Romney's vice-presidential candidate. Indeed, the Obama campaign getting involved is bound to give Walker more national prominence than he already has.

Heh. Maybe the Obama campaign is already thinking this.

He'll be poison. We could only hope to be so fortunate.

9. For the Republican base, yes. It would galvanize them to have some like Walker on.

Ultimately, I still think Barack Obama takes it again, though.

27. Naw...Walker's too toxic for the gop to consider...

...him for the ticket.

The gop's dream VP candidate will be:

1.). An ultra-conservative who is a darling of the conservative media (to help offset Rmoney's problem with his base seeing him as a moderate and energizing them).

2.). A woman and/or minority (black or hispanic) to try to attract voters from two entire groups of people the rethug's have managed to entirely piss off lately.

8. If he becomes available for Mitty

Then all the better as his governorship will also become part of the campaign and will help energize the labor unions the more. But IMHO, if he is kicked out, the rePIGs will sideline him as quickly as possible to avoid further damage.

16. I'm not sure I share your concern....

I still believe it will be difficult to unseat Governor Walker despite the apparent public support. He has the backing of the most powerful commercial and financial interests in this country with money. Unfortunately those resources often overwhelm the opposition.

I would not be so concerned about any eventual ouster being a springboard to the 2012 Republic ticket. First of all Romney could ask him to join the ticket even if he were still governor. Further if he is recalled I think he will be viewed as toxic by the Romney campaign...too much baggage and too much negative publicity, especially among independent voters.

Let's just hope in less than a month we are rid of this man who has wreaked so much havoc on so many innocent men, women and children to the benefit of his corporate overlords.

20. Makes sense

Wisconsin will be a swing state, and this will be Obama's last campaign. I still think he could have crushed the right wing by showing up last year with his marching shoes on like he said he would. But I seem to be in the minority with that opinion.

26. No IDs needed for the recall election

Two judges in separate cases issued injunctions against enforcement of the voter ID requirement at least through the June election. After that we'll have to see how the cases wind up. There are also two federal cases in the works that have not come to trial yet.

25. In this case I would agree with conventional wisdom....

If Obama comes to Wisconsin and campaigns with Barrett I think this could be one of the few things that could clearly help Barrett get over the hump and beat Walker. Obama, hopefully, will encourage turnout in the City of Milwaukee. Barrett will need an unusally high turnout in the City of Milwaukee to win the election, and, per past experience with Republican vote counters in Waukesha County, will probably need to defeat Walker by a 53/47 or so margin state wide. On Tuesday, Republicans sent a clear message, that they would be coming to the polls in June, and Barrett absolutely needs a huge turnout in Democratic areas to win this.

29. This is all or nothing...

The White House understands the importance and significance if Scott Walker wins his re-call. It must not happen. It would be devastating for our Party and our country. It is of utmost importance.
