A study of smileys: Bernie vs Hillary vs O'Malley supporters :)

Anybody who knows me, knows that I enjoy compiling data. I particularly enjoy studying DU in various ways. This is my first ever "smiley" study

I went through one page of each of the following forums: Bernie Sanders, Hillary Clinton, and Martin O'Malley, and recorded smileys in each OP and reply. For the purposes of my study, a post with any number of the same smiley in it (say, 30 bounces) was just counted as a single smiley (one of each type of smiley per post was recorded).

I did not pay attention to the usernames, basically making the assumption that there was enough of a majority of supporters of the candidate in each forum to enable me to collect statistically significant data without ensuring that each smiley was attached to an actual supporter of said candidate.

The top smiley in all three forums was the same:

After this, however, there were marked differences. Here are the current top smileys in each group (not counting the "hi" gif):

Bernie:

Hillary:

O'Malley:

You can draw your own conclusions... mine are as follows:

Bernie supporters are doing a lot of bouncing, smiling, giving thumbs up and applauding.

Hillary supporters are doing a lot of hugging, rolling on the floor laughing, smiling, laughing, and being patriotic.

O'Malley supporters are doing a lot of clapping, being Democrats, and giving thumbs up.

That's always a good thing, unless one is Bullwinkle.

Then, all bets are off.

it is awesome we are united by one smiley

I would guess it means Bernie supporters have the most enthusiasm. Looks like it from posts anyway and the similes support that theory.

Hillary supporters are very likely a bit more empathetic. Probably why I shy away from this group. I have a lot of empathy, but I am not at all liking to wear it on my sleeve.

I think O'Malley supporters are probably the most traditional. I don't have any data on that though. But, that smiley sure does remind me of old time traditions.

is that Hillary supporters are feeling somewhat persecuted on DU (as in 2007-8) and therefore feel the need to comfort one another.

You might be right about that. I like my theory better though. But, yours on reflection does seem more likely.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_Protection_Act_of_2005

The Flag Protection Act of 2005 was a proposed United States federal law introduced by Senators Hillary Rodham Clinton and Robert Bennett. The law would have outlawed flag burning, and called for a punishment of one year in jail and a fine of $100,000.
