60% of Baby Boomers get news from local TV,
Gen Xers, who bridge the age gap between Millennials (ages 18-33 at the time of the 2014 survey) and Baby Boomers (ages 50-68), also bridge the gap between these news sources. Roughly half (51%) of online Gen Xers get political and government news on Facebook in a given week and about half (46%) do so on local TV.
Roughly a quarter (24%) of Millennials who use Facebook say at least half of the posts they see on the site relate to government and politics, higher than both Gen Xers (18%) and Baby Boomers (16%) who use the social networking site.

(19,339 posts)They're getting links to news sources from their friends, about stories that they and their friends are interested in. Makes sense.

(29,322 posts)I only use Facebook to maintain long distance communication but mostly it is doormat -- most of the news posted on there was from Forkboy but my dad's side of the family and my dad especially posts a lot of Republican nonsense and some people from my Army unit that I added because they asked but they weren't so much news stories but images and captions like my dad posting how long the flags were flown at half-mast for the Sandy Hook victims & the number of Marines which equaled the total one weekend and zero being the number of days or some horseshit and a former unit member posting an image of a military person with "We are the 1% (1 million active duty members -- 1% of the US population), we don't occupy (can't remember what probably buildings or something dismissing the Occupy Wall Sreeet) we occupy countries" wonderful -- what does that have to do with wealth inequality? Was my response but Facebook typically used for friends & relatives opens the door to a lot. Sure you can get rid of them if you don't like what they say but I stay off because of the horseshit being shoveled.
On edit -- who you "like" has a big part of where information is coming from as well. Facebook is a tool to be used a variety of ways

(24,146 posts)i read the local rag and the denver paper, watch the local news as well as cruise du and fb for news.
print media is dying and millenials often don't have television. i would not judge them too harshly on this.

(29,322 posts)I hear they are no more but things are better now than being limited with a few sources and the television news (only PBS Newshour & Frontline outside of VICE on HBO are the only things worth paying attention to) so the access & variety is a good thing which DU or Facebook is the tool being used to collect it & share it in the same place. I think it shows why Millenials poll higher than other generations on topics such as climate change, GLBT rights, and Snowden.

(29,322 posts)but mostly a variety of places on the Web that I run into that other DUers do as well so they post here and I do the same and I imagine Facebook is the same way. A collection of stories, links, and information shared by people that found it or shared it -- Like the Daily Show has the most informed viewers of the news stories but the idea "they get their news from The Daily Show" was limited as I imagine the core audience was lefty bloggers.
