General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsAs far as I can tell, almost everyone I know supports Bernie and Elizabeth
there are some exceptions, staunch Republicans and so forth.
But here is my SWEEPING GENERALIZATION about ALL of these Bernie supporters and Elizabeth Warren admirers-
EVERY LAST ONE OF THEM supports women's rights and the fundmental reproductive freedom concerns inherent to that.
And so many are LGBTQ that I dont think for a second that any are fooled by the windblown conversion
of a regular participant in the circle known as the Fellowship(*)
marriage rights may have faced considerable opposition over the last few decades, but that should not have stopped
anyone of conscience from supporting them.
Dont ask dont tell, DOMA (**), pandering to religious bigotry? (***)
To see these issues cited as reasons LONG time supporters back HRC,
or as deflections for valid criticism from Democratic voters?
how hollow that rings.
anyone who proclaims that another poster is indifferent to the lives
and well being of women here, or around the world
because they oppose HRC's actual policies and historical record?
should be much more than ashamed.
That is some serious dirt to play in.
a corrolary to hate speech, really, and every bit disingenuous.
shame on them.

But not a single person I know in the real world supports Bernie.
Not one.

And of course if you poll them with a push poll people will give you the answers you seek.
IOW, you should maybe broaden your acquaintances?

(62,325 posts)same old system, same politicians, nothing changes'. A lot of apathy when you ask about Hillary.
But when you talk about Sanders or Warrent, people light up, but worry that they won't have a chance. I just tell them it's up to them, if they vote for him, he will have a chance.
Although I wouldn't say indifferent, more like despondent. Why brother when their desires don't matter.

(13,340 posts)I personally think Bernie is the Ron Paul, of the Democratic Party, in that he will have very loud and enthusiastic supporters, but will not have much of an impact at the polls.
Bernie is a great guy, and a great Senator.
He is not a great candidate, whether anyone likes it or not, and I think he will not win a single primary.

(6,437 posts)Small group of very loyal backers but no overwhelming general support.
In 2007, anyone reading DU could see Hillary would not win the primary. And very few even knew who Obama was.
See, DU is the meat and potatoes of the activist arm of the Democratic Party, and the most recent DU poll has Bernie with a fairly commanding lead of 90% of DUers.
Something to consider, eh?

(13,685 posts)Which, on DU, after a decade of Hillary campaigns, equals 10% support.
DU is a good place to foretell the political future. People here, for the most part, have their ears to the ground and can read the writing on the wall.

(20,135 posts)In 2007?
This time in 2007, Obama was polling just shy of 30%. If you didn't know who Obama was by May 2007, you were not even casually following the news.
DU is nowhere near representative of the Democratic Party. Not by a long shot. Most people here supported Edwards or Kucinich. Hell, there was a very large contingent here who insisted that Kucinich could and would successfully challenge Obama for the nomination in 2012. (Kucinich never ran and in fact lost his own primary; Obama won every single Democratic presidential primary.)

Very few support Hillary over Bernie.
They don't hate her but say they would rather see someone else win the primary.
That's why I never trust polls. Where is it where almost everyone you know supports Hillary?

(45,319 posts)Republican who remained in that racist and homophobic Party through Reagan's vicious neglect of the growing AIDS crisis, she and her Party were silent as 30,000 Americans died, Liz paused only to vote for that shitty policy to continue. When asked to explain her positions from that time, she evades the brutality of her views by chirping that she was a Republican because she like their ideas about 'the markets'. So she was in a racist, homophobic anti choice Party of drug warriors because their fiscal policy served her own 1% class. And she sure made herself rich doing consultancy work for Big Corporations. But those fiscal policies which served her gutted the American middle class and destroyed Unions.
Warren was in the Republican Party when they had Pat Buchanan as keynote, bellowing about militant homosexuals and radical feminists. Warren was in that nasty Party when Hillary was standing with the LGBT community, being attacked by Republicans for supporting us. I'm not going to forget that to please some straight white person such as yourself.
Warren was a Reagan/Bush Republican when Bernie Sanders was founding the Progressive Caucus in the House. They are not the same person and they do not have the same history.
Warren has never bothered to address her past actions, nor to make amends for them, nor offer even one word of regret, so far she just says 'I got really rich so I did not care at all!!!!'

(23,730 posts)and economic progressives: while there's certainly a trend to whitewashing *candidates* who burn down the economy for the insurance money, by saying "oh, just vote for the fact that they don't believe gays cause hurricanes," it's more an outcome of our pathological elections than a real confusion by voters
I mean, most of the economically-conservative Dems are absolutely not socially liberal, and it bespeaks Bachmann-level disconnection from reality to keep repeating that talking point; how pro-mentally ill is Emanuel, and how pro-peace is Clinton, and how is Larry Summers a feminist of any stripe? (and on the flipside, several NY liberals went out of their way to say that Israel had gone too soft on Lebanon and Gaza)

given to scare voters and justify the lesser evil,
the overwhelming support for bernie and Warren
comes from people who are truly pro choice and pro equality.

(99,710 posts)There are about two dozen regulars. About eighteen are white, four are black, and two are Latino. From what I can divine from the politically oriented threads there are six Democrats: the four black guys and two white guys. The rest are right wing and further right wing.
Inferences from small groups can only tell you so much... If I made inferences from that board to the larger population I would think we were doomed.

(3,675 posts)I only have one other gay friend who, like me , supports Sanders that i am aware of. All other Sanders supporter friends I am pretty sure are heterosexual. I do believe the LGBT community will be a big force in Hillary's campaign! Also, my really far left friends don't like either Sanders or Hillary or anybody who would run as a Democrat. I get lots of anti Bernie posts coming through my facebook newsfeed from the far left.

(4,458 posts)for "inflating" what I am personally hearing/seeing in my local area/family & close friends...We are All behind Sanders.
I'm certain others have different experiences...naturally.
So, one individuals experiences do not reflect the "whole".
It's a long, long, long journey to the primary election (in politics it's an Eternity) so Anything and Anybody can still happen.
Personally, and I only speak for myself: I am a Bernie Supporter who like HRC and Also wants to hear Everything from All of the candidates so I can make the Best decision next year.
I say, bring on the Dem Candidates.....every last one of them. It has been a Long damned time since we have had Real choice.
For those who are not posing as a Dem supporter...It saddens me to see the "snarking" between Sanders VS HRC crowd.
Open minds, imo, make the best and most informed decisions.
But I don't, I'm sure...reflect everyone's opinion about that

(4,748 posts)People with lots of mostly inherited money tend to vote Republican and a few continue out of "family tradition" still vote Republican though they all bitch about the candidates. Most of the people I consider friends are supporting Sanders and they tend to be involved and do a lot of reading and have specific policy concerns. The people supporting Hillary tend to be more cautious and less concerned with policy and more concerned with "beating the Republicans" than specific policies. Also many Hillary supporters have a nostalgia for the go-go Clinton years.
