But, "A big fucking deal?" Please.

We are fighting, and losing, wars. We are in an economy that is NOT recovering for the working man and woman, so there are STILL far too many unemployed and underemployed. The share of the work force participating as at an abysmal low number. Congress is dysfunctional. Economic inequality is appalling.

"Social issues" are Republican territory. It is Republicans who want to splinter this country with issues like abortion and gay marriage.

Accept that Obama has taken the high ground, but lets not be Republican and ignore things that really are a big deal in order to claim that we have the high ground on moral issues. We do not beat Republicans by becoming their mirror images.

He very carefully stated he thinks same sex couples SHOULD BE ABLE TO get married. Which as a lawyer he knows is entirely different than saying the have a RIGHT TO get married.

If you listen to the rest of the interview, he very clearly explains that he supports the right of individual states to decide this issue. So, he simultaneously pays lip service to marriage equality and validates Ammendment One. Way to triangulate!

ram a federal mandate down the states' throats but he's set the tone on the national level. This will go a long way in influencing progress in regard to states laws.

He can't come out and declare something the law of the land and thankfully, unlike some, he is cognizant of this.

democrats should never never give any social issues over to republicans. social issues are caring for our fellow citizens and our fellow humans, those are the values of, the ordinary, those caring values of life and those ARE democratic values and the should be the values of democratic underground. please reconsider your post. this president and party has proven an ability to multitask in some pretty serious things.

My mother and my uncle are both gay. I wish like hell they could get married, because it would make so many things easier for them.

When I woke up Wednesday morning, and heard about North Carolina, I felt like I got punched. Again. One more vote for hate against people who mean the world to me. I felt like a 12 year old kid again, whose mom was called a 'dyke' by the neighborhood bully. That day, my 12 year old self was disgusted that someone would disrespect my mother (the bully won't forget that day, either).

So yeah, it's kind of a big fucking deal. Ignoring the rights of a significant portion of the population is wrong, hateful, and bigoted. It seems as though the President is able to walk and chew gum at the same time.

The President still needs to "evolve" away from the notion that this can be left up to the individual states to decide. Civil rights should never be subject to majority whim. And 32 states have passed constitutional amendments banning same sex marriage.

(and please don't come down on me hard for expresing my truth) I am saddened somehow because this was several decades long overdue. Can't explain it because I am not good with words. All I know is... and IMHO believe that... it is shameful that common sense civil rights decisions are withhold for mere votes. I am trying to be respectful here but IMO this should not be considered a win for civil rights maybe because to my LGBT friends, the freedoms that I enjoy today should also be the same they should enjoy as both human beings and tax paying citizens.

Time for me to run and...

I feel ashamed (which is different) when I see those headlines belonging to the 80's in the year 2012. To me, basic human rights are a "fucking big common sense issue", just like affordable healthcare is and the pursuit of happiness in anyway we like but without putting others at a disadvantage. I don't believe in marriage, but I do believe in the "becoming" of two people committing to each other any way they want... even by marrying each other. You can't simply regulate love.

I always though that it is shameful to play politics with the life of others, but then we might have finally paid a big price and just finally are moving on. Democrats should not feel vindicated with the news but use this opportunity to look at themselves in a mirror and make a choice of running for politics or running with the goal of obtaining a better future. I am very happy we are no longer compromising with the republicans (compromising=abstaining from taking views contrary to that of the republican platform) in some issues. That is exactly why I am happy today.

Civil rights, women getting the right to vote - the list goes on and on. I can't believe we are still having these debates over contraception and abortion in 2012. Abortion will always be around - better safe and legal than unsafe and illegal! Right wingers need to just get over it. Now they are all worked up over marriage equality. This really is a very backward country in so many ways.

ME: Then vote for Romney, who bullies dogs and gay students -- and likes to fire people.

FRIEND: AND STATES CLEARLY THAT HE'S AGAINST GAY MARRIAGE. HE DOESN'T TRY TO USE ME AND DOESN'T TRY TO PLAY GAMES WITH AN ISSUE THAT'S TOO IMPORTANT TO ME. I'D RATHER VOTE FOR A GUY WHO SAYS WHAT HE MEANS AND DOESN'T TRY TO PLAY GAMES AND I PLAN TO VOTE FOR HIM AND WORK ON HIS CAMPAIGN. GLADLY. I WON'T GET SAME SEX FEDERALLY RECOGNIZED GAY MARRIAGE FROM A COWARD ANYWAY SO WHY NOT VOTE FOR SOMEONE WHO IS CLEAR ON THE ISSUE AND NOT USING GAYS TO ADVANCE HIS OWN FAILED PRESIDENCY? I HATED HIM BEFORE. I LOATHE HIM NOW. AND ANY GAY WHO THINKS HE'S "ON THIER SIDE" IS AN IDIOT.AND IF YOU'D LIKE TO WRITE ABOUT "DOGS AND GAYS" I'D LIKE TO WRITE ABOUT ALL THE THINGS THAT MAKE NOBAMA A HORRIBLE PERSON BUT WON'T SPEND MY TIME ON HORSE SHIT.
GO ROMNEY!

ME: First time a sitting president spoke out in support of gay marriage. It IS meaningful. It IS historic.

FRIEND: ACCEPTING CRUMBS FROM A COWARD IS NOT MEANINGFUL OR HISTORIC. IT'S CRAPPY POLITICS AS USUAL AND HE NEEDS TO GO. MAYBE HE CAN GO WORK FOR THE PASTOR HE THREW UNDER THE BUS WHEN HE'S DEFEATED. THAT WOULD WORK FOR ME AS LONG AS IT'S IN KENYA, HIS HOMELAND. NOBAMA IS A TRUE NARCISSIST AND ONLY DOES WHAT WILL HELP HIM GET ELECTED. WE ALREADY HAD HIM IN OFFICE TOO LONG. TIME TO GO. REALLY.

ME: The president does not WRITE the laws. He is not on the supreme court. He is not a dictator. But it is powerful when he supports issues and publicly states his opinions.

YOU CAN BELIEVE WHATEVER YOU WANT ABOUT HIM. HE PUBLICALLY SAID HE WAS EVOLVING!!!! HE'S FULL OF SHIT!!!!! HE'S THE WORST PRESIDENT IN HISTORY AND I HOPE HE GOES BYE BYE IN NOVEMBER. IF NOT WE'RE IN BIG TROUBLE AND HE WON'T TRY TO GET RID OF DOMA EITHER. GAYS WILL SUPPORT HIM (EXCEPT THOSE OF US WHO ARE ON TO HIM AND UIS DECEIT)AND HE'LL DO WHAT HE DOES BEST: LIE AND DECEIVE. SORRY FRIEND. HE'S A TRAGEDY THAT I DON'T DESERVE AND WANT HIM OUT BADLY. AND HE IS A DICTATOR. HE'LL DO ANYTHING TO ADVANCE HIS OWN AGENDA EXCEPT LEARN HOW TO WORK WITH THE REPUBLICANS TO GET THINGS DONE. HE'S AN IDIOT. WHAT A HORRIBLE FAILURE HE IS! I'M PROUD THAT I DIDN'T VOTE FOR HIM. IT'S ACTUALLY ONE OF THE PROUDEST THINBGS I'VE DONE. AND YES, I HOPE THE SUPREME COURT TRASHES NOBOMA CARE. MORE NOBAMA SHIT. SORRY THAT YOU HAVEN'T "GOTTEN" HIM YET. WHEN HE DISAPPOINTS YOU LET ME KNOW. MEANWHILE KNOW THAT THIS GAY IS ON TO HIM AND IS OUTRAGED THAT HE'S TRYING TO WIN GAY VOTES BY ONCE AGAIN LYING AND DECEIVING US.

------------

I am dumbfounded. This friend has never gotten over Obama's nomination -- specifically, Hillary's loss. She has turned angrier and angrier and sounds like a complete right-wing nut. This woman hated GWB, but seemed to look for someone to blame when Hillary lost, and has gotten worse by the day. I wrote back to her after this awful email exchange, and told her I don't need her hatred or condescending attitude telling me "she's sorry I haven't gotten him yet." I am appalled beyond belief that she plans to work for Romney's campaign for the sole purpose of working against Obama, whom she will never call president and whom she will never call by his proper name. I am stunned by how low she's gone...

I've marched, and literally carried the rainbow flag, in our local Pride Parade for the past few years, and she's taken my photo, etc. So... I never expected her to have gone this far.

In the past, when we've rooted for different sports teams, we supported and congratulated one another when our team beat the other. She always held our "sportwomanship" up for all to see and celebrate.

So yeah, wow.

I have a lot of RW relatives who are Fox News addicts and believe everything Limbaugh says. They know I am of the opposite opinion and some of them can't wait to push my buttons at any family function/gathering. The fact that I have demonstrated against the war in Iraq and in favor of reproductive rights seems to drive them absolutely crazy. Being in favor of marriage equality drives them even crazier. It goes beyond disagreement - I really think some of them hate me because of my beliefs. I'm glad I have some very liberal/progressive GFs for support. When all else fails, I can always come here to DU for some much-needed sanity. Peace!
