North Carolina - it's worse than you thought:

The North Carolina Same-Sex Marriage Amendment will appear on the May 8, 2012 ballot in the state of North Carolina as a legislatively-referred constitutional amendment.

The measure would define marriage in the state constitution as between one man and one woman, and would ban any other type of "domestic legal union" such as civil unions and domestic partnerships.

1. Seems to me there's a case to outlaw divorce with that wording.

If marriage is between 'one' man and 'one' woman, then they surely can't abandon the 'one' to marry another.

2. A poll result I saw last night

indicated that 60% of the respondents had no idea how far-reaching the measure will be.

Looks to me as if insurance companies are looking for easy ways to deny coverage to children and domestic partners (even in mixed-sex relationships) for one thing. The first time a woman isn't protected under the domestic violence laws and folks can't get insurance for their opposite-sex partners or their children, THEN you'll hear the howling.

I will say "Don't come cryin' t'me. I told you so."

Bigots are getting suckered and the irony is almost delicious.

3. 53% of North Carolinians support either gay marriage or civil unions

but have been led to think this just addresses marriage not realizing it forbids civil unions as well. Sooner or later, the sh*t will hit the fan.

4. The pro Amendment 1 people have been running ads on TV saying all this is not true.

They are claiming it is all lies that it will hurt straight non-married families and their children too. They are fooling people into voting for something that is going to mess up straight people and their kids as well. It is not going to be pretty. I wish people would listen to the truth and vote against Amendment 1.

5. Our President believes this issue should be decided by the States.

I can only hope that his thinking evolves there as well.

in a couple of years. As of where I live right now, there's not much I can do; I only hope people will come to their senses and vote against this, or I'm concerned for my own future.

7. My MIL in NC told me that preachers and clergy were telling people on Sunday

to vote FOR the amendment. Those rightwing ministers--how do they live with themselves?

12. I heard a woman call Stephenie Miller today and say they changed her polling place from

a library, to a church ... and out in front of the church ... you guessed it ... a big sign that said "Vote for Marriage".

Its getting better here ... but parts of NC are still crazy-land.

If I had seen that sign at a polling place I think I would have had words with the precinct judge & filed a formal complaint if it wasn't removed....

Probably one of the guys who carries the collection plate.

like John the Baptist...

Trust me, the sign would be gone, (through nonviolent means of course).

I'd have started to take pictures and called the local Democratic headquarters.

10. Lovely. Ram hate through in a low-turnout primary.

San Jose mayor Chuck Reed's attempt to do the same thing with a controversial pension reform measure pales by comparison.

11. That's exactly the plan. It would fail in November ... but might pass today.

My wife, son and I all voted AGAINST it earlier today.
