Questioning by US Judge Puts Arizona Sheriff in Tough Spot

PHOENIX — Apr 24, 2015, 3:02 PM ET
By JACQUES BILLEAUD and RYAN VAN VELZER Associated Press

An Arizona lawman who calls himself "America's Toughest Sheriff" has been put in a tough spot by a federal judge who could hold him in contempt for violating orders in a racial profiling case.

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio acknowledged under oath Thursday that his office was behind a secret investigation of the judge's wife.

Arpaio said he believes his former lawyer had hired a private investigator to investigate Snow's wife after she was overheard at a restaurant saying the judge didn't want to see Arpaio re-elected.

"We weren't investigating you," Arpaio said. "We were investigating some comments that came to our attention."

The judge didn't immediately respond to the revelation and showed no emotion as he questioned the sheriff.

I'm not sure how/where it's available but it's worth finding. I saw it when it aired and it's unsparing.

law. Since they hired a private detective Arpaio should stay out of trouble as long as he didn't use the sheriff's dept. However, that isn't the only time he's investigated his enemies. He used the sheriff's department to investigate several people who were trying to investigate his department. That investigation included reporters and city council people.

The article was about corruption in the Maricopa County Sheriff's department.
He lost the law suit.
