Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsThe phony computer security people just called me.
got her all flustered when she told me my license was expired and when I told her that wasn't true she kept reading from her script.
I asked her if she knew so much about my computer what my license number was. She rattled of a string of numbers and letters and I told her that Microsoft did not use zeros in the product keys.
She told me that my computer would stop working in two days if I didn't give them both access to my computer and pay them $39.95.
I kept asking her what kind of computer I had and she got it wrong on every count. After about 10 minutes she hung up on me.
I needed someone to give a hard time to this morning and that person filled the role.

Call us immediately or we will send the police to your house and you will be arrested." The whole time, it was "YOU" not my name. I was laughing so hard at how transparently fake it was, I had to listen to it three times to get through it all. The worst, though, was a call I got after a storm. A local business called, (sunday, when they were closed) and told me that their inspector was driving around and saw major damage to my roof. I said I was stunned. I asked which part, the East or the West facing roof. He said east. (My huge roof faces North and South) I asked if it reached to the second, higher roof with the two brick chimneys? He says it looked like the storm got both of them AND damaged one of the chimneys. (I only have one roof, and the chimney is galvanized)
I really felt like inviting him out while the police waited, but I simply ended up telling him to go pound sand.

(86,509 posts)from an "unavailable" number, my work has those so I answered it but only said hello. The caller asked for me by several names and said that they were calling with a "notice to appear in court" and that a judgement was being made against me... I hung up without another word. They immediately called back but I didn't answer so they left voicemail message with an 844 call back number and a case number to use and that if I didn't call back within two hours a judgement would be enacted against me. They never identified who it was about or anything other than I needed to call that 844 number.
I went to my local police and they said it was a scam. I haven't been feeling well and was kind of unnerved about it but after thinking about it, I have just cleared a couple federal bg checks and there was no issue aside from the fact that I hadn't been served any papers for any legal actions.
The cops said these guys also claim to be from the power company and any number of other businesses. What's comical is that they have even called to scam the actual police dispatcher!!

I've never had any official notice from either Federal or local governments that wasn't on those agencies' official letterhead. (86,509 posts)and I know that but I have been dealing with poisoning by spider the past ten days and my mind is kind of slow, I mean, I have a pretty good working knowledge of legal procedure and such, just was not expecting a demanding jerk trying to get a rise out of me before I was done with coffee. I knew, in the back of my mind, that there was something way wrong about the call... I don't many outside my area contacts. Since my work also has "unavailable" showing when they call, I was expecting it to be someone from my work.

(29,414 posts)That's got to be rough dealing with. My past-wife (ex) got some nerve damage from a recluse-spider bite on her hand. Nasty stuff!

2naSalit
(86,509 posts)with your comments. Like I said, my brain is on slow right now, and it does help to let others know what's being discussed.
I was bitten, all over my face about ten years ago, never saw what it was and the affects didn't present for a couple days but whatever it was, it totally messed up my face for three months. Looked like I had a bunch of circular 3rd degree burns complete with red, shriveled skin with disgusting pustulating blisters, I couldn't stand to look in the mirror as a whole third of my face was affected and looked so gross. Now, all these years later, I still have red discoloration like mild sunburn but I have everlasting nerve damage, can feel pressure but not temperature like bitter cold. Plus, when I am bitten by mosquitoes or whatever now, it makes the stuff on my face act up and makes me feel crappy like I have a mild flu. Unfortunately, I have been bitten three times in the last ten days, I have come to accept that poison for spiders is my best survival tool. I have "hosed down" my cabin with some nasty stuff today but I bet I won't be bitten again for a while... at least not in the cabin. I don't like killing things as a rule but a spider in my home becomes a dead spider as quickly as I can smash it. Some folks say it was probably a Hobo spider, had them all over the place in Idaho a long time ago... probably wasn't a brown recluse since it didn't eat away my face flesh, otherwise my nose, upper lip and half of both cheeks would be gone. Just left me with a few residual issues that can be managed without a lot of trouble. I have to wear hats whenever outside now and overhead lights bother my eyes.
I should be okay soon since I figured out about the bites early on this time and put slices of garlic on them over night, it's said garlic helps draw the poison out. Probably does, the garlic pieces were a funky shade of green/brown when I removed them... not like when you just leave it out on the counter.
Anyway, a thunderstorm is coming over the pass so I will probably have to get offline for a spell.
kentauros
(29,414 posts)Yes, you're "managing" it; I only hope the poison manages to leave your system eventually. I've read that catnip oil is a better repellent to mosquitoes than anything else. Although, you'd likely be quite popular with cats
Take care! Hope the storms weren't bad

(86,509 posts)After ten years of adjusting, I only worry when I get a bite. I wonder if the poison will ever leave me, I endured two series of anti-venom when it was first recognized along with clay packs and anything that would sooth the burning and my inability to digest my food properly at that time. This is the worst I've been since that time. Catnip would be interesting to try if I weren't allergic to mint! i have some other ideas that stem from that suggestion though.
It was one clap of thunder and then it rained for a while... is due to become snow later on.
Thanks for the suggestion, it gave me some new ideas... I use herbs for lots of maladies since I'm so far from medical facilities.
Take care too!

If you're not already aware of it, try Earth Clinic for remedies (here's the direct link to the section on Spider Bites.) It can be hit or miss with some as they're all "home remedies" just from people all over the world. You might find something unique that works better than anything tried yet

(86,509 posts)New sources are always welcome. My mentor (-ess?) is from eastern Europe and she is amazing when it comes to that stuff. We both studied cultural anthropology and she has food and natural medicine savvy from places most people in the US have never heard of. Her father was a doctor so she learned her stuff early in life, they were still poor and had to forage for food much of the time, it seems she knows about anything that is edible or medicinally valuable. One of the most valuable things she told me is that when you find something toxic in nature, the remedy is always nearby.
I'll check that out right now since I can't sleep either.
Thank you soooo much!
kentauros
(29,414 posts)That's nice to know, so thanks for that tip, too I also tend to heal myself through herbs and whatnot, yet do understand the value of current medical help. Sometimes the latter is called for (such as with antibiotics) and sometimes a strong herbal tea is all that's needed.
Botanical.com is another good source for herbal knowledge. Oh, and I remember MFM once quoting his father about mushrooms: "All mushrooms are edible at least once."
funny you should mention the mushroom quote! I pick lots of those when in season. Last summer was very rainy for my area and I became obsessed because there were so many good mushrooms of so many varieties, I had to dry most of them and sent them out to fellow 'shroomers for holiday gifts, made them very happy.
I have been reading that site you gave the links to, very informative. I have used some of the remedies that had the best reviews, except baking soda. I do use that for burns, now it is on the list for bites too.
BTW, I can consume basil if it's cooked, but I can't touch catnip or most other mints, standing in line at a grocery checkout is hard to bear with the gum and lozenge racks right there!
Thanks for all the links, I've seen the botanical.com before but didn't have it bookmarked.
I have to see if I can get to sleep for a while, one of the symptoms is insomnia and night sweats...eww.
Later, and thanks again.

She immediately posted on facebook how happy she was, and her (other) cousin, the man's sister piped up right away to say that she was quite sure her brother wasn't anywhere near Mexico! (They're all from Canada)
So by now my friend is really confused, and she gets another call saying there's been a terrible accident and could she talk right now on the phone with the police? She confirms the name of her cousin that is supposedly on site, and then says sure, and 'police' gets on the phone and starts in, and she says that she's talking to her cousin right now on Facebook....

"Hi dad? This is your son-in-law. I was riding my motorcycle in Toronto and got arrested. I'm in jail right now."
Dad comes back, "is this Floyd?" Well, of course it was Floyd.
This would have been an acceptable scam except for four little problems...
Floyd doesn't have a Bangalore accent.
Floyd hasn't owned a motorcycle in six years.
The REASON Floyd hasn't owned a motorcycle is he's now legally blind.
And Floyd was sitting in Dad's living room.
So Dad, without lowering the phone, yelled at the top of his lungs,
"Hey Floyd!"
'Yeah?'
"Are you in jail in Toronto?"
"Floyd" hasn't called back.

When my husband was on disability, it turned out that the disability insurance company blocks their outgoing number. If I didn't answer every call, he would not have gotten his checks.
It also goes back to when I had a business - I pretty much had to answer every call because there was no telling when it was something important for my business.

My friend in Houston had no power for 10 days after the hurricane. Cell phone service was intermittent at best if a tower had power or not. EVERY time he picked up his landline phone he got dial tone.
And 90% of the time my cell phone isn't even turned on. There's only about 10 people that even have the number. When I leave my house I don't want to be bothered by phone calls. I get plenty when I'm home in my business sideline.
