Jeb Bush’s dubious new pitch: ‘I am my own man’

The trouble is, the claim doesn’t seem to be true.

The New York Times reported over the weekend, for example, that Jeb Bush spent much of his adult life taking advantage of his family connections to advance his interests and ambitions. In Florida, people went out of their way to get close to Bush in the hopes that he’d relay messages and suggestions to his powerful relatives – which he routinely did.

Meanwhile, Bush is also furiously raising money for his campaign in a “shock-and-awe” launch – remind me, which president is that phrase usually associated with? – exploiting “the wide network of donors who supported his father and brother,”

Specifically on the issues of foreign policy and national security, Jeb Bush has assembled a team of advisers to help bring him up to speed. The campaign released a list that included his father’s Secretary of State (James Baker), his brother’s Deputy Defense Secretary (Paul Wolfowitz), his brother’s National Security Adviser (Stephen Hadley), a variety of members from his brother’s cabinet (Tom Ridge and Michael Chertoff).

In fact, Philip Bump reported that of the 21 people reportedly advising Jeb Bush, 19 are veterans of the first Bush administration, the second Bush administration, or in a few cases, both.

Just got into another argument with one of those 'My vote is so precious I don't care if we end up with another republican in the White House because how else will we ever move this country to the left' folks.

*** sigh ***

We still haven't cleaned up Bush Jr's shit.

And I think if we vote any republican into the White House it will only get 100000% worse.

We want to get principled on our vote do it with the House and the Senate. But we need that Democrat in the White House to make sure things don't go off the deep end like it did 2001-2009

than can be listed with those numbers. I would include however two unfunded wars to the list...

That guy was by far the worst president in my lifetime. It was shockingly bad. What shocks me more perhaps is that the people of our country didn't openly rebel. I mean with that presidency, I'm surprised we didn't see people with torches and pitch forks. And even worse are the ones who are so naive as to have "liked" the guy as &quot p)resident." That eight years can only be described as a nightmare for our country. That roughly half of our population can't figure out why actually astounds me.

73. A Reminder to Republicans of Just How Bad Things Were Under George W. Bush
Sun Apr 26, 2015, 02:28 PM
Apr 2015

August 4, 2014
By Allen Clifton

But while conservatives often like to claim that President Obama is the “worst president in history,” I thought I’d remind them, and everyone else, of just how bad things were under George W. Bush. Was his election not a foreshadowing of how terrible things would be in the next 4 years? For the first time since 1888 we “elected” a president who lost the popular vote. Could you imagine the conservative outrage if President Obama was elected president, yet lost the popular vote? That might have been the catalyst that finally triggered a second Civil War. Then just a few months later we saw the worst terrorist attack in United States history. We can’t forget about the Iraq War and all of the weapons of mass destruction that we didn’t find. It’s okay though, right? Only 4,487 Americans died fighting a war that was based on lies. The most since the Vietnam War. There’s always Afghanistan. You know, the war we started to get Osama bin Ladin – only Bush never got him. President Obama did though. Then don’t forget about the scandals like Abu Ghraib, Hurricane Katrina, the outing of a CIA official, veterans neglected at the Walter Reed hospital, Medicare Part D and a host of other scandals that plagued the Bush administration’s eight years. But I wanted to get up to 2008, just as Bush was leaving office. That summer, just before the entire economy officially collapsed, oil had hit its all-time high of $147 per barrel (right now it fluctuates between $95-105 on average throughout the year). While gas prices aren’t cheap now, our country had never seen prices well over $4 per gallon like most of the country experienced that summer.

Then came September when the bottom officially started falling out. But it wasn’t just that month. We lost jobs every single month in 2008 (2.6 million in total). The worst annual loss of jobs since 1945. In his last three months in office, we lost a combined 1.7 million jobs. In January 2009, his last month in office, we lost 598k jobs.
