Rand Paul: "I support the Reagan approach to the Iran negotiations."

"I support the Reagan approach to the Iran negotiations."
http://digbysblog.blogspot.com/2015/04/quote-o-day-rand-paul.html

*******************

A critically important international debate unfolded last week once a framework was in place to curtail Iran’s nuclear program. Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.), however, skipped the argument, remaining silent while on vacation.

The senator did, however, broach the subject in his presidential announcement speech in Kentucky this afternoon:

“I envision a national defense that promotes, as Reagan put it, ‘peace through strength.’

“I believe in applying Ronald Reagan’s approach to foreign policy to the Iran issue. Successful negotiations with untrustworthy adversaries are only achieved from a position of strength.”

...during the second term of the Reagan Administration. Senior administration officials secretly facilitated the sale of arms to Iran, which was the subject of an arms embargo.[3] They hoped that the arms sales would secure the release of several US hostages and use the money to fund the Contras in Nicaragua. Under the Boland Amendment, further funding of the Contras by the government had been prohibited by Congress.

"Talking about the Gipper always gets the rubes worked up!"

Other than that, I have no idea what the rationale is for Paul's sub-moronic comment.

And you sir, are a flaming idiot who will never be president.

This moron doesn't see what he did there? He thinks he should trade arms to the Iranians?

Someone buy that guy a clue.

The world's largest military, with hundreds of nukes with global reach, and military bases that surround Iran like a wreath?

How much more of a "position of strength" is it possible to have????

Oh right, I forgot. He's talking through his ass. He's praising the phantom of "strength" because it implies the current position is "weak" without ever having to explain himself.

None of these clowns will be able to conduct an intelligent foreign policy, unless they think finding some hapless country to invade bomb is a policy. Sorta like Reagan's pivot from Lebanon to Grenada.

Not buying it. His daddy was just talking about it in 2011 during the GOP/Tea Party debates, "Are you all willing to condemn Ronald Reagan in exchanging weapons for hostages? We all know that happened."

You can skip ahead to 1:22 to hear him talk about it.
