Untrained at crowd control, poorly led, fully armed.

Scared.

What could possibly go wrong.

If not for that, no one would have died or been wounded by gunfire.

12. This is the actions of a "well regulated militia"...

that unquestionably (according to gun grabber folklore), usurps/negates the RKBA of the individual citizen... you know, the arm of the government that is supposed to protect us from these kind of things.

26. yawn-o

Can't help it if the orders were flawed. The commanders were the faulty party.

And "gun grabber folklore" isn't why the 2nd Amendment is worded the way it is. Fantasy-land as always for the gun-religionists. But the NRA thinks it can re-define the 2nd Amendment to whatever they want.

33. Just following orders.... ehh?

And everyone knows how well that mind set has worked out in the past.

"Fantasy land"?... How about a dose of reality. The SCOTUS wisely disagrees with your outdated interpretation, and properly defines the 2a the way our Founding fathers and citizens of this country intended it to be.

11. I saw protesters put flowers in the rifle barrels of soldiers at the time

The soldiers were guarding the Presidio army post in SF, and there were protesters at the gate adjacent to Letterman Army General Hospital, where I was being treated for wounds sustained in Vietnam.

War is obscene enough without having to come home and see on the news that the Guard is gunning down people on a U.S. college campus.

Earlier, in '68, I led an Army contingency riot control squad at Ft. Jackson, SC, and though we had absolutely no training for that, we were put on red alert to go to the Dem convention in Chicago. My greatest fear was that they'd actually send us there--and that some idiot would issue us live ammo. I breathed a huge sigh of relief when they decided not to send us...

Two of them expressing their rights as citizens horrified by an unjustified occupation.

One was from a city right next door to me.

It still makes a state and a nation sick to think humans can do this to other humans in cold blood.

Last edited Sat May 5, 2012, 02:34 AM - Edit history (1)

I was in college at that time, did my share of protests and on this day my whole world changed. Protests were sometimes viewed as a good time, supporting a good cause. Now they could be fatal!

I was there in Grant Park as a friend of mine, the late Steve Goodman said in his song Daleys Gone " There never was a man who could inspire more love or hate, if you were in the park in 1968."

21. +1 and +1 again...

One for mentioning how this day actually did change all of our lives back then.

R.I.P. Allison Krause, Jeffrey Miller, Sandra Scheuer, and William Schroeder.

...and another for citing Steve Goodman!

Rest in Peace, Steve Goodman!

god damn those murdering bastards.

I wish I believed in hell, because the men that murdered them need to suffer for what they did.
there is NO excuse to shoot unarmed kids, NONE.

Purgatory for eternity is what they deserve.

25. Among 2 of the things I remember about that are...

...the idiot rightists who were holding up 4 fingers to anti-war protesters and saying that it meant that they'd gotten 4 and next time more!

One of the other things I remember is how the pro-war idiots would call protesters who confronted rifles with flowers "cowards"!

PEACE!
