(26,549 posts)He said he'd sign it if it was like the laws passed in 13 other states. It technically isn't like those laws - the other state laws only apply to government, not between businesses and customers.
He probably won't take that escape route, but it is there.

(35,015 posts)I see this as a concerted effort by Republican-controlled states to overwhelm us. They probably figure if enough states do it, those who oppose can't possibly stay on top of the issue enough to be effective in repealing them.

(9,148 posts)Or hoping to get it to the Supreme Court. They are counting on their GOP SC judges to rule in their favor.
This is personal & dead serious.

(19,549 posts)Gov. Asa Hutchinson appears to be looking for a way out of the current controversy. Particularly with the increasing volume of media coverage and corporate backlash around the similar law in Indiana, the governor has real concerns about the law's impact on economic development, sources say.
In separate meetings this morning, the governor and his chief of staff, Michael Lamoureux, met with two backers of the bill Sen. Bart Hester and Rep. Bob Ballinger and two opponents of the bill Rep. Warwick Sabin and Sen. Joyce Elliott.
The governor is potentially interested in the concept, also floated by Gov. Mike Pence in Indiana, of adding a "clarification" amendment to the bill that would expressly state that the law does not authorize discrimination or make it lawful to discriminate. The amendment would expressly list various categories race, religion, old age, etc. and would include sexual orientation and gender identity.
Given that Ballinger and the bill's proponents have said over and over that the bill is not intended to protect discrimination indeed, he claims it's only about preventing discrimination this would appear to be a change in line with their stated purpose, but sources say they are still resistant to such an amendment (Ballinger rejected the idea yesterday in committee and thus far today has given every indication that he plans to proceed with the bill as is). Hutchinson is reportedly making the pitch around the effort to recruit business to the state, but it's unclear at this stage whether the governor's muscle can push a compromise through.

(48,954 posts)types of fixes) are having an impact down there.
It is hard for the fix not to include protection from discrimination given that is how this has been framed by proponents. Take note of how "offended" Gov. Pence said he was that it had been characterized that way!
Which seems to take the intended purpose out of the law.
Wonder how that will effect efforts in the other teaparty states who have rushed the Alec law through their respective legislatures.
Please keep us posted!

(67,032 posts)place is going to be one hotbed of wars and all types of stuff. The US was about freedom and equality, but now is the time to take the United out of United states and just call it Divided States, or possibly US = United Stupidity.
What they are doing is building the foundation for a theocracy. Damn, but I despise religion, it is the great divider of mankind having caused tremendous deaths, persecution and division.

I have heard rumbling that we might end up with a similar law here in Michigan If that happens, I can't avoid everything in my own state, but hopefully I'll find out which companies here support it and which don't.
