Republicans opened up a can of worms by trying to make a scandal out of Hillary Clinton's emails and now it is coming back to bite them as a second previously unreported Jeb Bush email account has been uncovered.

a state guv does not fall under the same laws or responsibilities as the SoS - a fed position.
This angle might get some traction, but unfortunately it's really apples & oranges...

(52,155 posts)Florida actually had and still has a law which requires that Bush's records be in the custody of the state and available for freedom of information requests. The feds had no such law then and only passed one after Hillary left office.

(34,060 posts)I wouldn't vote for Jeb Bush in a million years, and I expect him to be about as transparent as mud.
I don't care that he did it to, or first. I expect better of someone I might actually vote for.

(35,296 posts)I have a job that requires I use an email account for my official work.
The EULA also says that it's subject to FOIA requirements and anything on that account can be viewed whenever my administrators desire. In real time, if they feel like wasting their time.
In fact, while they let us use my work email account for private matters, they privately strongly suggest keeping work and private life separate. It's not hard, to be honest. I can access both accounts from work, both accounts from home, and both accounts on my phone.
They suggest this privately because they know it's none of their business if I have a second email account. It's not their business to suggest or not suggest that kind of thing for my private life, at least on anything official that may be deemed a condition of my employment.
However, I use my work account for private business that might be urgent. If I'm at work and the school has to email me because something's up with my kid, I don't want to wait until I get home to find out, or check my private email at lunch. But anything I need to keep I forward and delete from my work account to keep the two psychological spaces as separate as possible. I don't have the luxury to answer any and all personal emails upon receipt. My job must not be important enough that I can interrupt it just whenever.
I'd expect Jeb Bush and HRC to have (at least) two email accounts. Jebbie has 3, it seems. I'd be surprised if he didn't have more.
Come to think of it, I have not just 2, but several. My work account, my home account. A gmail account I set up a while back that I just remembered exists--unless it's been cancelled. An Outlook account linked to my kid's Xbox that I check annually (when his Xbox subscription needs renewing). Who knows who's found those last two accounts and written me there. I probably have more, if truth be known. I've been using email for 21 years, back to when ISPs weren't national but I was moving from state to state.
Then again, they're not a problem. Whoever's written me isn't my concern--it's not who's written me, but what I've written that would be at issue in any kind of legal proceedings.

(1,379 posts)That's the answer to all of this!!!!
I live in a very red part of the state, and am surrounded by Fox watching Conservatives, and to hear them call it, they would be as happy with this scandal wiping out Jebs chances, as much as Hillary.
They don't like Jeb either.

(35,296 posts)Some insist that mixing work and home life is obligatory. You can only have one account, it seems. Then when you delete all that personal crap from your work email, well, did you really just delete *personal* stuff or are you hiding something?
Others insist that work and home should be separate. Then you'll always have two or more accounts. In that case, what's lurking on that home account that you're not sharing? Because I have a right to know.

Whether as SOS or governor, our elected officials are not in the office 24/7.
I think all of this is overblown, for both Bush and Clinton.

(36,063 posts)One of the things we've learned from psychology is that most people who think there is a possibility of their behavior being monitored modify their behavior towards conformance.
Which isn't to say that it's 100%. For 2 weeks I've watched many cars and trucks drive 75-80 mph through a 50 mph construction zone with one of those radar monitor displays.
The 50 mph limit for construction is just 5 mph lower than the regularly posted speed limit so those drivers just completely disregard speed restrictions...probably because they have no sense there will be enforcement.
