Group Turns Human Poop Into Charcoal For Cooking

You know, this is actually a good idea. Especially after I once watched a documentary on Current TV about Shit and the conditions of sanitation around the globe.

This Group Gives Refugees Toilets, Then Turns The Waste Into Charcoal For Cooking

This inventive solution is no load of crap.

Across the globe, 1.8 billion people use a drinking water source that is contaminated with fecal matter, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). To make sure the waste produced by refugees and low-income households in Kenya doesn’t infiltrate their water systems, a group founded by U.S. university grads is turning poop into charcoal for cooking.

Established in 2011 based off of research conducted at Emory and Georgia Tech, Sanivation provides toilets to people in need, collects the waste and then treats it with solar energy. The final byproduct are low-cost briquettes that can be safely used for cooking and heating homes.

Sanivation co-founder Emily Woods said in a video interview that the briquettes are particularly “fantastic” because it burns longer than standard coal and emits less carbon monoxide and particulate emissions.

Less pollution means significantly fewer deaths.

I just can't picture myself enjoying a juicy, medium-well filet cooked over a pile of dried shit.

I wouldn't want to eat char-broiled shitburgers--literally. That would put me off my dinner.

In the end this is good news. Our world is overpopulated and sanitation is a serious problem in third world nation. What sounds gross to us might actually be a solution for other countries where fecal matter contamination is a real problem. It seems this invention would eliminate the contamination and produce something that could be used to help create fire. I'm assuming during the drying process the nasty stuff is burned away - there are solar panels involved.

But it is still good for a laugh

There was a very recent article here on the poor Canada Geese (I welcome them) whose poop is 3 lbs. a day and effing up parks, so there's measures to combat it. Yet overpopulation of humans and 'their load' isn't often discussed, even though it's a Mess, like climate change and all - Made By Humans!

The shit is mixed with charcoal dust then pressed into bricks. It helps reduce the use of charcoal, a scarce resource, and as Martha Stewart would say, "It's a Good Thing!".

I suspect it will make us nostalgic for the days when the worst thing about camping out was the after affects of the cooked bean dinner.

Why not human?

In some parts of Afghanistan you will see some covered with cow dung shaped into specific sized disks and dried. It's collected all summer and used for heat in the winter.
