by trying unjam is m-16. He was told to grab the barrel and hit the butt on a rock.

He was in a fire fight and the barrel was red hot.

you get the picture.

he hated those rifles.

Motivated to stay alive. I was drafted in 1966. I had no idea what we were fighting for just like this guy. A kid who was a year younger than me who I played baseball with enlisted in the marines and was killed in Vietnam before I was drafted. That's as much as I knew.
It comes down to survival.
