White House chief of staff: 50 years of Israeli occupation must endU.S. cannot pretend Netanyahu didn't say no Palestinian state would be established on his watch, Denis McDonough tells J Street conference in Washington
We cannot simply pretend that those comments were never made, McDonough told the J Street conference in Washington, whose left-leaning audience received his remarks enthusiastically.
Israel cannot maintain military control of another people indefinitely, he said. An occupation that has lasted for almost 50 years must end.

(181 posts)was stated. What Israel is doing to the Palestinians is criminal. Israelis illegal settlers rip up Palestinian's olive groves. Israeli illegal settlers build synagogs on Palestinian lands. Hiways in Gaza and the West Bank don't even have road signs in Arabic. This has got to end.

(40,416 posts)If anybody claims such as Netanyahu, they are no better than "lebensraum".
Sorry for the Godwin invocation, but Bibi is not much different. In other words, he is a fucking religious lunatic.

(58,724 posts)He is pretty much completely secular.

(40,416 posts)And he seems to pander to the religious kooks, who want no peace in the Middle East.
So, there is no effective difference than if he was religious.

(12,801 posts)a) forced to leave their homes by the Israeli government?
b) willing to live within and be subject to the authority of a Palestinian State?
I don't see either of those things happening.

(12,801 posts)I wasn't familiar with it; here's a snip from the Summary:
The border marked on a detailed map is final and indisputable.
According to the accord and maps, the extended borders of the State of Israel will include Jewish settlements currently beyond the Green Line, Jewish neighborhoods in East Jerusalem, and territories with significance for security surrounding Ben Gurion International Airport. These territories will be annexed to Israel on agreement and will become inseparable from it.
In return to the annexation of land beyond the 1967 border, Israel will hand over alternative land to the Palestinian, based on a 1:1 ratio. The lands annexed to the Palestinian State will be of equal quality and quantity.
The devil will be in the details, and meanwhile Israel keeps making facts on the ground with more settlements. I think this would be extremely difficult politically, and even moreso because hardliners on either side could derail the process.
I think this initiative exists because there is no other more viable route to peace, but I sincerely doubt this has much of a chance.
Thanks for the info.

(17,320 posts)Israel is one of our greatest allies and closest friends. Our relationship is much larger and more enduring than two clashing personalities.
I am confident that Hillary will make a clean break from the J Street crowd.
