Zarif expressed astonishment that some members of US Congress find it appropriate to write to leaders of another country against their own President and administration. He pointed out that from reading the open letter, it seems that the authors not only do not understand international law, but are not fully cognizant of the nuances of their own Constitution when it comes to presidential powers in the conduct of foreign policy.

I can't help but think of some playground bullies that don't really know the game but are willing to try to intimidate the rest of the players.
It used to be that the electorate had a chance to vote on the qualifications and abilities (intellectual?) of the candidates. Now the T.V. populace just votes on the booble-head on their favorite nascar show.

In fact, one reason they are so angry at Putin is because Russia is one of the five nations working with Obama on the IRAN talks.
Since Russia and China (also working with Obama on Iraq) but have veto power at the UN, the only way to try to undermine these talks for a peaceful resolution with Iran, is to demonize the allies. They can't very well go after the UK and France, yet, (they used to hate France airc) Russia is the target of the Right right now.
Nothing they, and Bibi would like better right now than to cause Russia to leave that alliance.
I truly wish we had a real news media in this country so people didn't get their information from propaganda merchants.

Putin is a Leftist. Fox is not a news channel. Right Wingers hate Putin, they are still fighting the Cold War, and to them, he is the epitome of the word 'communist'. I'm not talking about the Fox educated morons, I'm talking about those who are in positions of power and who desperately want a war over there. They are working hard to get it started and are furious with Obama over that and over Iran.

(27,461 posts)The Error in the Senators Letter to the Leaders of Iran
By Jack Goldsmith
Monday, March 9, 2015 at 5:55 AM
Josh Rogin reports that a group of 47 Republican senators has written an open letter to Irans leaders warning them that any nuclear deal they sign with President Barack Obamas administration wont last after Obama leaves office. Here is the letter. Its premise is that Irans leaders may not fully understand our constitutional system, and in particular may not understand the nature of the power to make binding international agreements. It appears from the letter that the Senators do not understand our constitutional system or the power to make binding agreements.
The letter states that the Senate must ratify [a treaty] by a two-thirds vote. But as the Senates own web page makes clear: The Senate does not ratify treaties. Instead, the Senate takes up a resolution of ratification, by which the Senate formally gives its advice and consent, empowering the president to proceed with ratification (my emphasis). Or, as this outstanding 2001 CRS Report on the Senates role in treaty-making states (at 117): It is the President who negotiates and ultimately ratifies treaties for the United States, but only if the Senate in the intervening period gives its advice and consent. Ratification is the formal act of the nations consent to be bound by the treaty on the international plane. Senate consent is a necessary but not sufficient condition of treaty ratification for the United States. As the CRS Report notes: When a treaty to which the Senate has advised and consented is returned to the President, he may simply decide not to ratify the treaty.
This is a technical point that does not detract from the letters message that any administration deal with Iran might not last beyond this presidency. (I analyzed this point here last year.) But in a letter purporting to teach a constitutional lesson, the error is embarrassing.

For those of you who are properly appalled, may I suggest a quick game of "What if the Democrats did this"?

(29,322 posts)This is actually controversial within Iran right now as some people aren't to keen in opening diplomatic talks with the US because they have been on the receiving end of the reality part of the historical perspective regarding Iran-US relations. Unlike Republicans ridiculous nukes rhetoric, US (for the benefit of the oil & gas corporations specifically) has primarily been concerned with accessing all that oil Iran sits & "state run" really angers or lead to the bad guy marketing.
Republicans much more than the Democrats fight for the private business or the large ones mostly is basically all they really need to put on their GOP page. Also guns & abortion could also be added but not much than that. Shell, Chevron, etc that is who the Republicans love more than anyone since they obvious dedicate their political careers fighting for them. Historically will look back favorable on this noble cause

But a top Iranian negotiator and Democrats slammed the letter, calling it a purposeful attempt to undermine the delicate negotiations as they reach a pivotal deadline later this month.
"We believe this letter has no legal value and is indeed just a propaganda ploy," said Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif, in a statement provided to and translated by CNN. "Whats more, while the negotiations have not yet borne fruit and there no agreement yet, pressure groups in the U.S. are so worried that they are using extraordinary measures to prove that they, just like Netanyahu oppose any kind of agreement."
