I agree with you that there's too much fighting & discord here. There's a lot of really cool people here though, and I haven't found anywhere else to discuss the democratic party & current topics with other democrats. I like reading here too, and tend to read more than I post. I hope you find some civil discourse somewhere else, or contribute to some of it here. Either way, I wish you well.

There was a real cult of personality thing going on back then that seems to be just warming up now. I'm afraid we're all going to be making major use of "TRASH THREAD" unless the admins come up with another Election 2016 forum to get it out of General Discussion, allowing the rest of us to hide that particular forum.

DU got fairly civil after that happened, so I hope it happens again.

That's awesome. I was a huge Obama enthusiast. I'm proud of how he's been as President. I still love my Monster Truck! I doubt I'll ever be as enthusiastic about a candidate. I'll despise the republican candidate by the time the general election rolls around.

I don't expect I'll ever be as lucky on my presidential choice. Right now if I had an ideal candidate it would be a cross between Warren, Sanders, Naomi Klein, Jay Z and Thomas Piketty.

I'd especially like a majority of democrats in Congress to take over the big banks, tax the heck out of the rich, stay out of wars, double the minimum wage, launch universal health care and create jobs jobs and more jobs. More than half of them women, people of color, youth. Anything but the old stuffed shirts!

People are fed up. They want peace and prosperity. How damn long will it take for local democrats to get the message? Right now too many of them on local and state levels act dull & smug & corporate. Replace them with our ideal candidate. They will win.

Yeah, let's add Neil. I want to keep Jay Z. (Nothing against Crosby, he can be an ambassador or something.)

most part. I am exited that people are focusing now much more on local and state elections. Many liberal/progressive organizations chose candidates for local elections AND put progressive issues on ballots wherever they could last November and mostly they won.

The progressive Dems in Congress retained their seats while the Third Way candidates did not.

Now they can build on all the work they did to elect MORE progressive members of Congress and on School boards.

There's a lot of work to do to get the kind of Congress that will represent the people but the good news is it began last November and was mostly very successful.

Sun Mar 8, 2015, 07:47 PM
Mar 2015

Every primary is like this at DU. The fact that nobody has even officially announced a candidacy, as far as I know, tells me that this primary may heat up even more than the last, and that one was horrific.

Democrats like to think that they can fight dirty during the primaries and suddenly become one big happy family when the nomination is done. DU is no exception. I haven't been ripping anyone at the throat, but I am not a happy camper.

The primaries are the only opportunities I have, at least for president, to vote for a candidate I'd actually like to see in office. Nobody I ever want in office is ever actually nominated. I want a broad, deep, equal playing field. I don't see that happening. It didn't happen last time, either, as there were only two candidates left standing literally MONTHS before my primary ever arrived, and those were the two I didn't want to support at all. I didn't care who won by that point.

The idea that I got 8 years of one, and now some think I should have 8 years of the other, pretty much killing all hope the Democratic Party might once have offered, leaves me almost not caring right now, before the campaigns have even started.

Thankfully, Hillary is not the only thing to talk about here, lol.

Sun Mar 8, 2015, 07:52 PM
Mar 2015

It only affirms the OP's decision. I know how s/he feels. We don't even have a single declared candidate yet!

It's one thing to fight dirty, but when all that fighting is directed at other Democratic voters, it doesn't promote any of the goals people claim to care about.

I suggest the way to bring about the changes you want in terms of choices in candidates lies in working to pass a constitutional amendment to require public financing. Absent that, only the names and faces change, while the power remains in the hands of big money.

Sun Mar 8, 2015, 09:54 PM

I've advocated for public financing for decades now. It's going to take more than me, but I'm there for that effort.

I was appalled during the '08 primaries when a party that is supposed to champion the underdogs drew lines in the sand between gender and race. I'm also, I have to admit, not very happy with Democratic voters who keep forcing candidates I don't like on my ballot in the general election. I'm active in the real world during primary season, but sometimes I can't even keep a candidate I like going long enough for my state's primary to arrive. I'm up for an energetic primary season...if we can have a broad, deep pool of candidates to consider.

took over the party back in 2008. The same ones who keep telling us only conservative Democrats can run and keep losing elections with their bullshit attitude. If they did not have such a losing record with their insistence that only conservative Democrats should be even allowed to run and that god awful attitude that they are better than the rest of us, people would not be so pissed off. When you have to put up with bullies, you fight them back. That is the only way to ever make any progress. Watching the sausage being made is nasty work. Take as much time as you need. The rest of us hate each other enough that we will continue to fight this imaginary primary war before anyone even announces IF they are going to run or not. All of the people saying Hillary WILL BE running for sure are full of shit. She has said repeatedly she won't run again. So, all of this is just the left wing and the right wing of DU hating each other and having a-NOTHER stupid ass circular firing squad, because that is what we do. Others will say they don't hate each other, but they do too. They just want to think they are morally superior. It's bullshit. The right wing of DU hates the left wing of DU and vice versa. The difference is I am one person on the left who will admit it.
