(21,526 posts)so the guy chose not to have insurance, now he wants society to pay his medical bills. all while denouncing the ACA.
No sympathy from me. people like him are the reason thousands if not million died without access to healthcare before Obama gave us the ACA.

(62,325 posts)HC system. And because we don't have one, he is turning to the public for help.
THAT is exactly the way Republicans WANT it to be. When you ask a Republican how people who are sick should get help if they cannot afford Private Insurance, they will tell you that 'Charity will take care of it'.
Maybe he will understand now why Liberals have always supported a National HC system, or maybe he will view this as confirmation that we do not.

(15,882 posts)is never going to happen. Once in a while it happens, but it is a lot more rare than people think. Certainly not going to be from a bunch of strangers who someone doesn't respect.
Change happens when people open their minds to a TRUSTED source, something that causes a tremendous amount of angst among people who seem to think that they should be listened to. Pretty common, especially when people try to pretend they are more concerned about others, can't even be honest that it is their own ego they are trying to satisfy.

(4,876 posts)They want the guy to wake up. Many of the comments say "I didn't plan on giving you anything but after reading all the liberal comments..."
This is exactly how you turn things around. Calling people on the right terrorists does nothing for anyone. Kind of like torture. You capture someone and torture them, you create more "enemies". You capture them and treat them humanely, then maybe they think twice before attacking you. America has turned into a shoot first nation. It's time to stop shooting and start figuring out how to change peoples minds.

(14,914 posts)After this federal government program enabled him to walk away from his debts and make a fresh start, he could have embraced a life of fiscal responsibility and wise choices. Instead, he squandered what he made on his vanity senatorial and congressional campaigns and grandstanding at Cliven Bundy's ranch. He is so dishonest as to claim on his website that he did not have health insurance because he "is self employed." Everyone knows that the self-employed can obtain insurance under the ACA. He made a conscious choice to reject available coverage for himself and his wife, which is pretty stupid for someone over 60. He let his ideology override common sense, and now he wants another bail-out. I think he will gladly take what liberals or anyone else choose to donate, but I don't have high hopes on any of this changing his hateful opinions.

UPDATE #1 28 DAYS AGO
We, as local friends, are so grateful for each person stepping forward to participate in fundraising for Sheriff Mack. Many are asking how he is doing, so we thought you would like to hear a word directly from him. Then we would like to hear from you about ways to arrange additional fundraising activities offline or with any suggestions for this project. Please send an e-mail through the icon by Jimmys photo, or call 480-247-1124. Thank you! Heres Sheriff Mack:
A word from Sheriff Mack:
My wife and I are touched with every word of encouragement and donation. Thank you! I am mostly at home and resting a lot, thankful to have a second chance at life. There are ups and downs day to day. Overall, Im a long way from being back to my normal state of health, but I am happy that this week I saw a doctor who offers hope of his guiding me in that direction. Since it appears that recovery will take a good deal of time with associated expenses, I struggle to not feel stress both the stress of thinking about huge hospital and other medical bills as well as regular living expenses while I am unable to work -- and also the stress of not being able to accomplish what I am so passionate about doing for others. It is difficult and humbling to say that we need your help, but we do. Please keep us in your prayers and stay with us for the duration of this fight.
ABOUT THIS CAMPAIGN
I am the son of Sheriff Richard Mack. Some of his friends came to me wanting to help my dad by posting the following news description that they wrote:
Every day law enforcement officers put their lives on the line for the rest of us, in their line of duty. Richard did that for 10 years as a police officer and for 8 years as an elected sheriff, and he hasnt stopped since, working in various ways to serve and protect fellow citizens. He fought in and won a landmark court case which has become the basis of legislation with provisions for additional protection. He has diligently been dedicated to educating individuals in the public about their rights. He has developed training for sheriffs, urging them to be courageous in protecting and defending the rights of local people and to be peace keeping officers. Often using his own personal resources to make trips, Sheriff Richard Mack has been traveling extensively, responding to those who request his assistance -- but now he needs ours.
A little over a week ago the heart with which he has given so much to others gave way on him and resulted in a cardiac medical emergency that is ongoing. This is happening only weeks after his wife was hospitalized for a very serious health issue. Their modest personal resources alone arent sufficient to carry them through these crises. With the family's permission, we (local friends) are dispensing this call for help, to ask for your financial contributions. We are confident that you will want to be a part of the recovery process, to put a stop to Sheriff Mack's challenges......
and help him bounce back to great health and work!
Richard now needs some very special medical attention. We dont know how much money will be required for him to recuperate and rehabilitate or when he will be able to work again, so the amount of the goal is just an estimate for the first step and may need to be adjusted as time goes on.
He is not happy, of course, that he needs to be quiet and rest and that he is not able to work according to his values. Those of us who have been fortunate enough to know him personally can attest to his humility, integrity, courage, servant spirit, and passion about people being free. We can see that he is driven by his love of God, his beautiful wife of 40 years, their 5 children and 12 grandchildren, and his love of and compassion for humanity.
Thank you so much for helping as you are able and for sharing this need with all your friends on Facebook, Twitter, etc. Please click on the "poster" icon at the bottom of this page to print nice fliers and distribute them or maybe post on bulletin boards at your work, church, and local stores. Monies will go into the Richard Mack account at Wells Fargo Bank. Please send an e-mail if you want more information. Let's work together to send him a message:
Come on, Sheriff Mack, we are not kidding around...
We want you totally well and back to work, like this...
and this... You're an American Hero! We're behind you and staying with you to see you through to great health, for as long as it takes!

Please accept this donation from a concerned secular homosexual. I don't appreciate your politics, and admit a fleeting moment of delight when I read the headlines about the irony of your situation. But still, you are a human being in need and I have done well for myself and luckily can afford full medical coverage and still have money left over to help others. I truly hope this helps in your time of need. Best wishes for good health for your wife and yourself.

I'm a U,S citizen , I lost my job of 10 years in October, so this money is coming out of my unemployment. But I'm doing for you, right now, wgat you would never have done for me, because unlike you, I'm able to empathize with people before i'm directly faced with their problems. Conservatives don't believe that anything should ever be done to help anybody struggling with something until they or their family are faced with an injustice. Then, and only then it becomes an issue, heck when it becomes their problem then it's a civil rights issue . No one should have to face poverty to get healthcare . Healthcare is a human right . I hope your republican friends are standing by you right now . I genuinely hope that your health improves and that you reconsider getting health coverage . If this was me in your position , there would be no outpouring of support, I'd have to rely on what my government made available for me, so would 99% of other Americans. I hope you reconsider your position on affordable healthcare

I'm adding $5 more to go with the $100 which I just sent to you, so I can finish my comment. Apparently, my loquacious verboseness exceeded the allowable number of characters for this site. So, I continue: " Think about how liberals would open the windows of Heaven if you publicly recanted all the ugliness towards President Obama and cut a public service announcement showing you signing up for a policy which a person in your situation can buy ONLY because of President Obama. Liberals gave over $350,000 in donations to James Robertson who was having to walk to work. Some conservatives probably contributed as well, but can you see a person who hates President Obama on such a visceral level, donating to a black man in Detroit? Yeah, I cant either. This donation represents the amount I saved on my premiums this month, thanks directly to President Obama.

(15,805 posts)They haven't changed one iota, and they're still haters. The latest statement isn't posted on his Gofundme page, but on Conservative Reason, a rightwing website that the liberals who are generously giving him money, aren't likely to visit and learn how this thankless, unappreciative "taker" really is.
If anyone else feels compelled to donate, please pick another group or cause that actually cares about helping people in need, and just notify this ungrateful bastard that you did so in his name. He's not going to change, he's just blowing off all the liberals who tried to help him and wrote heartfelt comments. There's no point in trying to shame a man without a conscience into developing some little compassion for others in need of healthcare because this is still their mindset: "If Sheriff Mack can do fine without insurance, you can, too."

(1,290 posts)Ironic that now he will have a pre existing condition and WITH ACA he can get covered. But if he gets his wish and it is repealed by SCOTUS then he will be dependent on bleeding heart liberals and or the the GOP favored Emergency Room for his future health care needs.

It's comforting to read the comments. For one thing, it'll show you you're NOT alone. You CAN see comments on the right-hand margin. It's inspiring. One comment from a wingnut said that raising money this way is how medical bills should be paid - people can choose to donate rather than have the gubmint just take the money away from them.
I'm sure Mack will think the same way.

(16,286 posts)It would further show that their position is based solely in hatred of Obama, to the point where they may be willing to die for that hatred.
He wasnt really willing to die for it though, was he, as he is now asking for the help he could have received but for some reason he opposed the help, I wonder why (I know why)

(7,170 posts)This whole thing makes no sense. Typically, policemen and firefighters have very good insurance and disability due to the dangerous nature of their jobs. I can't believe that during his entire career as a sheriff that he didn't have health insurance provided by the government. What on earth was he planning to do if he got shot and ended up in intensive care?
He actually cancelled his existing policy provided by his local government because he was annoyed at the ACA? He didn't go to the insurance companies and self insure directly without using the state exchange? What's the story on his wife not carrying an insurance policy? He didn't try and hook up with one of those Christian health cost sharing groups where people send donations to each other? If he got shot in the line of duty and crippled what was the plan?
...
Okay so he worked 10 years as a police officer and then 8 years as an elected sheriff. So why didn't he work 2 more years in law enforcement and get the pension and retirement health care? Police officers often retire early, so why not do your time and collect your bennies, like lots of RWers?
Why run off and do all this advocacy? Unpaid or without benefits??? He's a big guy and I'm sure his chloresterol and BP were up, so his doctor was telling him a heart attack was in the cards....
So with these health conditions in the background, he decided to roll the dice? He was getting annual physicals in law enforcement, so he wasn't ignorant. Heart attacks rarely rise up out of nowhere.
If he's well connected enough to raise money and get elected office, why didn't his buds get him a job in law enforcement.
Something is weird.

I'm with you. What kind of LEO ends up in this sad state financially? Doesn't add up. He's a swindler. Sure wish a reporter would do an expose on this guy. He is the perfect poster boy (unwittingly of course) for the ACA. This story would be great for promoting the ACA and maybe even be useful for campaigning. Sort of reminds me of Joe the Plumber in the man's dishonesty.

(15,648 posts)People should help each other, he says, not "depend on the government" (which is clearly made up of alien beings.)
These people see nothing wrong with getting your medical care paid for through coin donations to a jar placed at a cash register in a gas station. That's how it's done here in the state of Georgia. If it's good enough for poor Ansley who needs a kidney transplant, then, by golly, it's good enough for all of us!!!
