President Obama is an admitted Star Trek fan, and a fan of one character in particular: Mr. Spock, the pointy-eared Vulcan played by Leonard Nimoy.
"Long before being nerdy was cool, there was Leonard Nimoy," Obama said in a statement released by the White House Friday after Nimoy's death. "Leonard was a lifelong lover of the arts and humanities, a supporter of the sciences, generous with his talent and his time. And of course, Leonard was Spock. Cool, logical, big-eared and level-headed, the center of Star Trek's optimistic, inclusive vision of humanity's future.
"I loved Spock," Obama said.
Obama said he met Nimoy in person in 2007. "It was only logical to greet him with the Vulcan salute, the universal sign for 'Live long and prosper.' And after 83 years on this planet and on his visits to many others it's clear Leonard Nimoy did just that. Michelle and I join his family, friends, and countless fans who miss him so dearly today."

In the new start trek movies, Syler makes a great Spock! Different era, different actor I guess.

(90,624 posts)Thank you so much for posting that. I loved Mr. Spock too, having "met" him on the first tv series, which meant so much to so many of us.
Rest in peace, Leonard Nimoy, and thanks for all the memories.

(34,845 posts)...can any of us imagine a current member of the GOP saying how much they liked Spock?
It just doesn't seem possible to me. They might pay lip service to the idea but it couldn't be sincere, could it?
The character of Spock is emblematic of the vast gulf between Liberals and Conservatives. Or maybe I'm reading too much into it.

(90,624 posts)OTT, when it comes to plain ordinary humans (not politicians) Mr. Spock's passing will be felt keenly regardless of party.
Night before last I discovered that my next door neighbor (fundamentalist Christian, Republican) was as much a fan of sci-fi in his youth as I was in mine. Haven't seen him today, but I'm sure he'll notice this passing just as I have.

Maybe not so ordinary after all.
In a way, he has become my touchstone to remind me that GOP politicians may be assholes, but other Republicans are your friends and neighbors. There are just certain things I don't discuss with him, though I do make a joke about our "dueling yard signs."
