WASHINGTON Senior Republicans conceded on Tuesday that the grueling fight with President Obama over the regulation of Internet service appears over, with the president and an army of Internet activists victorious.
The Federal Communications Commission is expected on Thursday to approve regulating Internet service like a public utility, prohibiting companies from paying for faster lanes on the Internet. While the two Democratic commissioners are negotiating over technical details, they are widely expected to side with the Democratic chairman, Tom Wheeler, against the two Republican commissioners.
And Republicans on Capitol Hill, who once criticized the plan as Obamacare for the Internet, now say they are unlikely to pass a legislative response that would undo perhaps the biggest policy shift since the Internet became a reality.
snip//
In addition, it would ban the intentional slowing of the Internet for companies that refuse to pay broadband providers. The plan would also give the F.C.C. the power to step in if unforeseen impediments are thrown up by the handful of giant companies that run many of the countrys broadband and wireless networks.
And an avalanche of support for Mr. Wheelers plan driven by Internet companies as varied as Netflix, Twitter, Mozilla and Etsy has swamped Washington.

Net Neutrality: President Obama's Plan for a Free and Open Internet
More than any other invention of our time, the Internet has unlocked possibilities we could just barely imagine a generation ago. And here's a big reason we've seen such incredible growth and innovation: Most Internet providers have treated Internet traffic equally. That's a principle known as "net neutrality" and it says that an entrepreneur's fledgling company should have the same chance to succeed as established corporations, and that access to a high school student's blog shouldn't be unfairly slowed down to make way for advertisers

(45,251 posts)Either the FCC has to get around that case or Congress has to act affirmatively to overrule it with new legislation. I don't see the Republican Congress doing that. Until we see if and how the FCC proceeds, nothing changes the case decision.

(16,230 posts)That overcomes the objections in that case.
My understanding is that they are doing exactly that.

That's all I've got to say! Except to remind that - there's gonna be a GIGANTIC difference between who gets nominated by a DEM for a seat on the Supreme Court, versus who gets nominated by a CON for a seat on the Supreme Court. (16,230 posts)If you setup a website, if I setup a website, it will be just as accessible as sites favored by Comcast, or ATT, or Verizon.
This treats the internet the same as wired phone service was treated for decades. No one's phone call was favored or given priority over anyone else's. The same will be true for the internet.
This is especially important because the internet is taking over and replacing traditional telephone and television service. It's also replaced a lot of mail service. Nearly all information is, or soon will be, delivered over the internet. That makes it too important to put control of it in the hands of for profit corporations whose interests naturally conflict with those of individuals and other businesses.

(55,445 posts)I thought Obama was hellbent on *destroying* Net Neutrality?? I remember reading those sentiments right here on DU on a daily basis...
I keep hearing the same thing, but then again it's all from the same group that claims he has done NOTHING since taking office, only works for the 1%, will take away or SS and medicare, and on and on. The also hate Obama care, and now the very same people are have been posting post after post trashing Hillary on a daily basis, and have said they won't vote for her is she wins the nomination. For some odd reason I don't really get the feeling these people are "really" trying to support democrats, or trying to get democrats elected.

(13,581 posts)involves regulation.
One friend posted a pic of a supertrawler with it's hugre freakin' net full of fish and commented how disgusting that was and that someone needed to do something to shut that down. Another right-wing friend chimed in that some countries just don't have any rules.
I countered with, "by rules, I think you mean regulations Jeff. It's okay, you can say it! LOL Commercial fishing needs to be regulated for the benefit of everyone." Can you say STFU? That was the end of it. Not a peep, other than a couple other people liking my post. I'm still chuckling about that one. I love a good unconditional surrender!

(14,255 posts)On Wednesday, the stocks of major cable and telecom firms like Comcast and AT&T were up, in what Macquarie Securities Amy Yong called a relief rally. Wheelers move has long been expected, and the market reaction was to the news that the proposal wouldnt subject Internet providers to rate regulation.
So, the carriers can still jack up prices at will.
