Greek anti-bailout leftist wins over austerity - weary voters

http://uk.reuters.com/article/2012/04/30/uk-greece-election-leftcoalition-idUKBRE83T0O420120430

(Reuters) - Alexis Tsipras says Greece's political elite are bluffing when they say harsh austerity cuts are required to keep the country in the euro zone. And he wants Greek voters to call them on it.

With Greece due to vote on May 6, the young leader of the Left Coalition party is urging Greeks to vote out austerity - and the two pro-bailout parties imposing it - arguing Europe cannot afford to kick Greece out of the monetary union.

"It's a pseudo-dilemma, a fabricated myth, that our future in the euro is at risk. It is blackmail by pro-bailout parties, a tool to pressure people to accept measures that bring misery," he told Reuters in this port city in central Greece.

"If any country left the euro under the pressure of markets, then as a herd they would seek the next one to speculate on. The cost for the zone, for Germany, would be huge," he said.

I've been saying this all along but didn't think of it as blackmail, though that's what it is.

That's a good bet. Hope he and other left parties do well.

The far-right is campaigning in Greece, too.

Greece: amid the chaos, the rise of the right

http://www.euronews.com/2012/04/30/greece-amid-the-chaos-the-rise-of-the-right/

&quot I)n a country in its fifth year of recession, where pay-cuts and tax rises have become the norm, the extreme right-wing are scoring heavily with their anti-immigrant rhetoric.

According to opinion polls the once-obscure Golden Dawn, which wants to deport all immigrants, looks set to enter parliament.

Party candidate Giorgos Germenis said: “Greek factories must be reborn, Their chimneys must be filled with smoke once more, and of course all illegal immigrants must leave. If all the illegal immigrants left – and there are more than three-million – there would be three million jobs for Greeks.”

The far-right, though, is not going unchallenged. While the mainstream socialist PASOK party and the conservative New Democracy are scrambling for the extreme vote by promising to crack down on immigration, anti-racist campaigns have been making their voices heard.

The left is on the right tract campaigning against austerity. Let's hope they surprise the mainstream parties next Sunday and Golden Dawn does not do well.
