Great signs--

As the signs say, we have a truly horrible record with regard to rape, sexual assault and domestic violence, some of the worst statistics in the country, and all our governor can give us is platitudes, "Choose Respect," as he's going after Planned Parenthood, understaffing the VPSO program (village public safety officers), and cutting back eligibility for our Denali Kid Care program, He's a major, major jerk -- so bad that we almost miss Sarah, if you can believe that. Sarah was a celebrity -- Sean's a "true believer." Scary.

If a woman is raped out in one of the villages, it takes days before an Alaska State Trooper can get out there to investigate. The territory is huge and the need is too great. Some villages have VPSOs, but many do not.

She's a true believer too.

That said, this little war on women is really having an effect. It is lighting the spark under the people. The true test locally will be tomorrow, but that is 'nother story.

But wow almost miss st Sarah? Now that leaves me cold.

Say what anyone will about Sarah, at least when she was governor, she worked in a bipartisan fashion actually working with the Democrats to craft a couple of really good bills, most particularly our ACES bill which makes sure that Alaska gets its fair share of the revenues from the oil being produced up here. Sean wants to roll all that back and give the Big Three oil companies (BP, CP and Exxon) an extra $2 billion a year in "incentives" without any kind of guarantee at all from them that they will actually produce. It's a long and complicated issue, but he's so in the pocket of Big Oil that his own party refused to pass two of his proposed bills on this subject.

Like I said, long and complicated, but he is truly a disaster. He has continued the worst of Sarah's policies with regard to wildlife management, etc., and added a bunch of stinkers all on his own. He's horrible.


In case anyone feels sorry for the oil companies, Conoco-Phillips alone made over $600 million in profit in Alaska the first three months of 2012. Poor babies, obviously they need more tax breaks.

And yet conservatives moan and kvetch about subsidies to non-oil energy companies that, as start-ups, really can't be guaranteed to produce, either.

Luckily, our bipartisan senate shut Sean down on this one, at least for the time being.

Oil politics is quite complex here due to the fact that our Constitution states that the citizens of the state are the "owners" of the oil, so the oilies don't have to negotiate with private owners like they do in the Lower 48 oil fields. It's our governor's and legislature's responsibility to see that the citizens/state of Alaska get the maximum benefit from the development of the resources, but Sean Parnell (who was, after all, a Conoco-Phillips lobbyist before he became Sarah's lieutenant gov. and worked for the law firm that represented Exxon in the EXXON VALDEZ litigation) seems to be working for the benefit of the oil companies. He's a real piece of work, flying under the radar a bit nationally, but just as deranged as Scott Walker, Rick Scott, et al.
