Wow, unbelievable GOP poker painting....Last edited Sun Apr 29, 2012, 01:55 PM USA/ET - Edit history (1)
In real life Lincoln would be kicking the shit out of all these uncaring idiots! Unbelievable how the GOP spins their history.
On Edit: By uncaring idiots, I mostly mean Reagan, Bush 1 and 2 and Nixon! Lincoln would 100% be a Democrat today! ![]()

33. There were attempts to get Ike to run as a Democrat in 1948
|
Last edited Sun Apr 29, 2012, 03:43 PM USA/ET - Edit history (1) Early in that year, Truman's prospects were looking really bad and there was some effort among Democrats to get Eisenhower to challenge him for the nomination. Then Truman's popularity improved and those efforts fizzled.
But the point is that Eisenhower was largely non-political at that point and definitely not a Republican. Even in 1952, he was recruited by the Republican leadership mainly because they were looking for a non-partisan figure who would not be identified with the extreme right and McCarthyism. (Though they did have to cater to the right to the extent of saddling Ike with Nixon as his running-mate.) |

Last edited Sun Apr 29, 2012, 06:05 PM USA/ET - Edit history (1) The Democratic party claims a direct lineage to Jefferson, I believe based on the argument that when the Democratic-Republican party split, the federalists generally went with the other side. That's why a some local clubs have "Jefferson-Jackson" dinners.
Whether that is a legitimate claim or not is another issue, but based on that and the hairstyle, I'm betting the image is Jefferson. on edit: well, maybe not, looking at the chin again. Probably is Jackson. |

As for the "Lincoln would be a Democrat today" stuff, I have an uncle with political views to the right of Rick Santorum who insists JFK would be a Republican Tea-partier type today. Ditto Harry Truman, says he.
I call nonsense on all that sort of thing: people form political views within the context of their times, and the passions and challenges of the era in which they come to maturity. And adult Lincoln today, born, say, in 1965 or '70, would be a very different human being than the one born in 1809 Kentucky. And a Lincoln put in a time machine in 1865 and transported alive to 2012 would be...well, a time traveler with a lot to sort out and catch up on from the last 147 years. |

"I will say then that I am not, nor ever have been in favor of bringing about in anyway the social and political equality of the white and black races - that I am not nor ever have been in favor of making voters or jurors of negroes, nor of qualifying them to hold office, nor to intermarry with white people; and I will say in addition to this that there is a physical difference between the white and black races which I believe will forever forbid the two races living together on terms of social and political equality. And inasmuch as they cannot so live, while they do remain together there must be the position of superior and inferior, and I as much as any other man am in favor of having the superior position assigned to the white race. I say upon this occasion I do not perceive that because the white man is to have the superior position the negro should be denied everything."
