Sandra Fluke Says Monica Crowley Insult Was 'Blatant Homophobia'

Georgetown University law student Sandra Fluke responded to Fox News pundit Monica Crowley's tweet on Thursday, saying she was disturbed by the conservative commentator's "blatant homophobia."

Im not going to let this kind of thing get to me personally, Fluke said during an appearance on MSNBC's "The Ed Show." What really bothers me about it the blatant homophobia in the comment, and the idea that that is an acceptable thing to say publicly.

Crowley caused a stir on Thursday when she responded to the news of Fluke getting engaged to her longtime boyfriend by tweeting, "To a man?"

During the MSNBC interview, Fluke said she was most disturbed that Crowley intended the tweet as an insulting joke.

I dont want an apology from anyone personally, Fluke said. I think it is possible she owes an apology to the LGBTQ community, because I am not offended to be asked whether or not Im with a woman. Its not offensive to me to be gay, but it was clearly meant as an insult.

Crowley could take lessons from Sandra Fluke on how to be a class act. Instead Crowley shows us how to be a low-life dipshit!

1. It's also just plain stupid

Advocating for birth control = gay?

The stupid, it hurts. Please make it stop.

16. It makes sense if you say the pill is for health reasons.

That's the clearest use of the pill that is not for contraception.

Isnt that the point Fluke was trying to educate people on?

20. So, if you use the pill for health reasons, that means you're gay?

Christ, do you think before you post that shit?

23. Obviously not. But laughing at the idea that a lesbian doesn't need the pill

Defeats the purpose of the original argument.

34. What, exactly, were you saying "Makes sense"?

It seems to me that you were saying that it would make sense that Fluke could be assumed to be gay because she noted how important contraception can be for reasons other than having sex. I don't understand that one bit.

41. In what universe was Monica Crowley's comment an effective jab at Sandra Fluke?

The original gag was that Sandra Fluke needed tons of birth control because she was such a slut. We got it. Not true, also ignorant, but we understood the jab.

So now that she's engaged, "ha ha she's a lesbian".

To me, that is a massive FAIL of snark. Sandra Fluke truly didn't feel insulted...because it was such a dumb and ineffective swipe. It unintentionally insulted the LGBT community, but it totally missed Sandra Fluke.

For anyone to argue that this was an effective burn on Ms Fluke... I just don't see how.

3. Monica Crowley has always struck me as an Ann Coulter wannabe. She makes outrageous statements

just to draw attention to herself, then she sits there, flipping her hair around and acting like she's the one who has been offended. She's just a waste of space, IMO.

Eventually the ugliness inside leaches to the outside...

It's so out of the blue and so inappropriate. And so what if Ms. Fluke was going to marry a girlfriend rather than a boyfriend?

The time of insulting us because we're gay has long passed. You may as well use the "n-word" too Crowley.

31. who (besides Limbaugh) said "Sandra needed BC pills"?

When I look around my campus, I see the faces of the women affected by this lack of contraceptive coverage.

And especially in the last week, I have heard more and more of their stories. On a daily basis, I hear yet from another woman from Georgetown or from another school or who works for a religiously-affiliated employer, and they tell me that they have suffered financially and emotionally and medically because of this lack of coverage.

And so, Im here today to share their voices, and I want to thank you for allowing them not me to be heard.

<...>

In 65% of the cases at our school, our female students were interrogated by insurance representatives and university medical staff about why they needed prescription and whether they were lying about their symptoms.

For my friend and 20% of the women in her situation, she never got the insurance company to cover her prescription. Despite verifications of her illness from her doctor, her claim was denied repeatedly on the assumption that she really wanted birth control to prevent pregnancy. Shes gay. So clearly polycystic ovarian syndrome was a much more urgent concern than accidental pregnancy for her.

After months paying over $100 out-of-pocket, she just couldnt afford her medication anymore, and she had to stop taking it.
