In response to new tax, Dollar Tree stops selling soda in Berkeley

Source: Oakland Tribune

BERKELEY -- Sodas are no longer sold at Dollar Tree stores here these days, an early casualty of Measure D, the 1-cent-per-ounce tax on the distribution of sugary beverages approved by voters in November.

The beverage offering at the Dollar Tree store on San Pablo Avenue at Gilman Street this week consisted largely of water and a few fruit juices. Meanwhile, at Dollar Tree over in El Cerrito, $1 bought a 2.5-liter bottle of Shasta brand Cola or Diet Cola; Grape, Pineapple or Orange soda; or Tiki Punch or Lemon Lime Twist, among other sodas.

In Berkeley, the same products would go up to $1.85 -- 2.5 liters comes out to 84.5 fluid ounces -- assuming the Measure D tax will be passed along to the consumer. And that $1.85 does not include Berkeley's 9 percent sales tax and a 10-cent recycling fee.

Dollar Tree corporate officials could not be reached Tuesday.

It's a stupid tax, but most people probably won't get too worked up over it. A lot of people will buy their groceries outside of the city, and others will just go ahead and pay it if they really need their soda fix.

That said, I've never been fond of sin taxes.
