Hockey playoffs: Joel Ward's game-winner for Capitals unleashes racist tweets

The Capitals ousted the defending champion Bruins when Joel Ward scored in overtime of a 2-1 Game 7 victory. Every game was decided by one goal and four went into overtime.

Unfortunately Ward's goal also unleashed a barrage of tweets that were as vile as they were racist.

Ward is a Canadian whose parents are from Barbados.

Chirpstory.com collected the offensive tweets, almost all which used NSFW language and heavy use of racist terms. (Thanks to Black Sports Online for the assist)

more: http://content.usatoday.com/communities/gameon/post/2012/04/joel-wards-game-winner-for-capitals-unleashes-racist-tweets/1

If you must read the vile its here: http://chirpstory.com/li/6781

I went there and read a couple. Its not worth the effort. Its the typical ignorant racist type comments.

FYI.. racism is alive and well in America.

a bit like soccer fans in some parts of Europe. Also, there are very few black players in the NHL. I guess that tends to bring out the racism even more.

It is sad and ruined the great feeling I had after the big win last night. I am a Caps fan.

this is not normal behavior, nor are hockey fans 'rowdy and obscene' compared to other sports in the US. And I've never met an openly racist fan before. I'm sure they are there, but I have never encountered one, and I basically grew up in a hockey arena.

Load. of. Crap.

I guess that comment was a bit over-the-top but compared to other sports like baseball, hockey fans tend to be more rowdy/obscene. At least that has been my experience.

My first Major League baseball game (that I went to, incidentally, because we were travelling in the US with my brother's elite hockey team) I was surprised at the rowdiness of the fans compared with NHL games. At the time my dad told me it was because of booze (which wasn't allowed at our NHL facility at the time) but now there's booze in our NHL building and it IS rowdier, still not as bad as that baseball game was (the Twins vs Brewers). So my experience was different.

There is still a racist streak a mile wide. Not quite as openly tolerated as in some areas of the country, but it's there.

He scored the goal on Tim Thomas. I think he was the player that refused to attend the White House ceremony honoring the Hockey champions last year because he was against Obama.

Joel Ward on the ice for the Washington Capitals for game 7 of the NHL playoffs.

Joel Ward greeted by teammates after scoring the winning goal.

Its a celebration! Joel Ward scores the winning goal on a clutch move in overtime of game 7 to defeat the defending world champion Boston Bruins!

And I'm suffering for it this morning - got only about 2 hours sleep. Had to watch all the post game hooplah and then I realized I had never really watched a NFL draft. Knicks won also. Glad it's Friday.
