Mayor de Blasio tries to appease Authoritarian, Bullying NYPD. This is what he got in return:

Hundreds Turn Their Back on de Blasio at NYPD Officer's Funeral

Mayor asks Protesters to pause until after funerals of the two dead officers

That was a mistake, as we have seen by the reaction of the NYPD.

Hundreds Turn Their Back on de Blasio at NYPD Officer's Funeral

NYC Mayor Asks Protesters to Pause Until After Cops' Funerals

The atmosphere was mostly respectful, but there were scattered signs of protest even before the police officers' action when the mayor spoke.

A block from the church, though, retired NYPD Officer John Mangan held a sign that read: "God Bless the NYPD. Dump de Blasio."

In his speech, the mayor seemed to try to reach out to police, honoring not only Ramos, but the entire NYPD.

After directing his remarks to the Ramos family, he said he wanted to "extend my condolences to another family -- the family of the NYPD -- that is hurting so deeply right now."

You cannot 'reach out' to bullies and authoritarians. They interpret it as WEAK, and like all bullies, rather than accept an extended hand, they will become even more emboldened and will delight in slapping it down.

In fact, bullies are more likely to RESPECT those who will not put up their childish behavior.

They may not like them but they are far less likely to mess with them.

The NYPD has been in need of reform for a very long time.

The Mayor ran on issues like reforming the police's interactions with the community in NYC. It was badly needed and he knew it.

He WON on those issues.

He wanted more community policing rather than the militarized tactics the NYPD has been operating under for years now.

The people of NYC AGREED with him.

Those who participated in this insubordination and lack of respect for an elected official, need to be disciplined.

They are proving more than ever just how much Police Reform is needed. I hope the Mayor realizes that and continues to do what he was elected to do, whether these cops like it or not.

Mayor de Blasio is a good man.

And he needs all the support he can get right now to end the insubordination of the NYPD and to do the job he was elected to do.

Edited to add photo of Mayor de Blasio's family. He dared to express concern for his own son and for doing so, members of the NYPD irrationally BLAMED him for the tragic deaths of the two Police Officers.

PS: Protests continue in many cities across the nation today against Police Brutality.

The funeral was in honor of Ramos, who seems to have been a good officer.

The funeral also was for his family. Watching those kids broke my heart.

They actually disrespected one of their own by making that ceremony about them.

Just wrong.

were there to try to stop de Blasio's plans to reform their department and to try to silence the legitimate protests against the unlawful killings and discrimination against young African Americans and other minorities.

It was a shameful, selfish display. And all of those who participated should be disciplined.

Neither for the Mayor, nor for the family of the deceased. Just who are they portraying as protecting and serving, anyway? Rhetorical question...

Ultimately, this was an organized action that I believe will backfire on the NYPD.

They were beginning to feel that maybe their reign of terror, across the country using 9/11 and the Drug Wars as an excuse for their behavior, was seriously being threatened as the protests not only didn't go away, but grew.

Added to that, de Blasio is a Liberal, their right wing worst nightmare.

So it is clear that their cynical politicization of these tragic deaths, is an attempt to stop what they could not stop and it IS shameful.

I agree with you, I believe it will backfire on them.

harassed, demoted, sometimes forced out of the Department. We saw what happened to the whistle blower a few years ago when he exposed corruption in the NYPD. He was hauled off to a psychiatric ward and kept there for six days.

They cannot step forward alone, but who can they trust when they decide to speak out?

I just added a twitter post to the OP showing at least one Police Officer who did not turn his back on the mayor.

more cop funerals

Cops want to act like dicks to the mayor and the cops don't want to change fine, the actions by the cops will lead to more problems with the cops and the people resulting in more then likely more dead cops.

The SCOTUS said that smart people can be excluded by the police guess we are seeing the result of that SCOUTS decision.

seem to be the facts. They didn't say thousands, but those who decided to do this apparently planned it so they would be together. At least one of them didn't join in, and it's possible there were others. That doesn't change the fact that hundreds of them decided to use a funeral for their own selfish and childish temper tantrum.

I have always been a supporter of organized labor and collective bargaining, but I think it is time to outlaw police unions. The case of Akai Gurley has raised the question in my mind if some police unions are not organized criminal gangs involved in obstructing justice. As an armed group with a license to kill, they should not be organized outside of the chain of command and civilian control. We don’t allow the military to unionize, the same should go for anyone who carries a gun and has special privileges to use deadly force.

provide funding for more cops, put more people in jail who do not belong there, and take away Constitutional Rights. And they've grown this police state where the police are more like an occupying army who view the people as the enemy.

No Drug War would mean cutting the 'crime' rate.

Then go back to community policing and RAISE the standards for people who want to be cops.
