In the traditional scenario for a lame duck president, the opposition party had been forced to work with him during his term because they needed to actually govern. Then when the President was due to leave office, the opposition no longer worked with him, because they felt that he had lost his power because they could now wait for the a new President to try to get what they wanted.

However, in this case, the Republicans, by virtue of refusing to work with the President during his terms, reversed the situation. The President no longer needs to worry about trying to include them in the process.

They failed to notice that they are the "lame ducks". . .

Another short-sighted miscalculation of the Republicans.
