Senate Dems to Take the Offense in Republican-Wrought War on Women

04/22/12

Senate Democratic leaders plan to bring the debate over the so-called war on women to the Senate floor this week.

Senate Democratic Policy Committee Chairman Charles Schumer (N.Y.) said the Violence Against Women Act would come up for debate before lawmakers leave Friday for a weeklong recess.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) has filed a cloture petition on the legislation so Democrats can take it up immediately after finishing postal reform legislation. (Every Republican member of the Judiciary Committee voted against the legislation in February).

Republicans are scrambling to put together an alternative bill that would allow them to vote against the Democratic measure and duck political charges that they are anti-women.

. . . Vice President Joe Biden, is the original author of the VAW law.

Like the problem could be permanently eradicated and the need for legislation moot?

Why is this law written so that it needs re-authorization?

Probably has everything to do with the fact that there are legislators in Congress who we have to debate and defend this act against. The arguments that this duplicates other laws is the worst lie. The folks who argue against the cost and bureaucracy come in a close second.
