You would think a retired guy could keep up on his email. I'm a week behind. That means I have many stories I hope to post over the next few days when I finally get caught up.

All three of our K9 kids are rescues. Sweetie came from Hearts United with a broken leg. How can an owner do that in anger? I just don't understand. She would later become the ASPCA rescued dog of the week several years ago. Our dogs are provided for in our will. There is just one place we know they will be loved after we are gone. Hearts United. And they will stay together.

We have been there and watched them perform miracles.

I know it is that time of year when things can get very tight. We have DUers on the sharp line of becoming homeless and worse.

This isn't easy. I not asking you to take away from feeding the hungry and or homeless etc. IF you can afford a few $ in your charity budget, this would be a good place for it. A generous donor is matching dollar for dollar up to $100,000.

IF you ain't got it, don't feel bad. 30 years of 'Reaganomics' have many of us waiting for the promised trickle down.

Venus is a joy and a pleasure to have living with us, albeit temporarily. We came in one day to find her waiting patiently for us to open the doors and let her in. We're sure she had a home once, and was probably dumped at the shelter by her people for some ridiculous reason. She is a super happy girl who just loves all people and is the sweetest friend to the other dogs. She is so smart and listens intently to everything we say, as if trying to absorb all the love she has been longing for her whole life. We think the Lovely Venus will house train quite quickly, if she is not already completely there. She really is just a charming, all-around good girl.

Jersey came from a horrible Nebraska puppy mill. Happily, he has no long term health issues and is happy and carefree. He is a good little guy who thinks our co-founder, Carol, walks on water and will do any cute thing he can think of to earn the chance to be in her presence. We do not know if he came with his superb singing skills or learned them here, but Jersey is an amazing yodeler. We've never quite heard the likes of it and he uses this talent to his advantage. After all, who can ignore a yodeling Maltese? Jersey is still trying to be friends with all the other little dogs and has a great time as long as he is supervised. He may have been beat up by his cage mate at the puppy mill and will need a little help trusting that will not happen again. He adores all people and although he has his favorites, he is friendly and loving with everyone he meets.

8. My close friend just adopted a 6 year old who was rescued from an Amish puppy mill

She was a breeder and lived in a cage her whole life. She was in terrible shape, mammary tumors, all of her teeth had to be pulled and she had to have surgery on her ears twice to remove the terrible infections and polyps.

Today she is loved and happy. And she'll live the rest of her life loved and happy.



She is a sweet and loving girl. Adopt, don't ever ever support puppy mills.

I do cat rescue in San Antonio, Texas. Our fair city was, at one time, the city with the HIGHEST kill rate in the nation. We started collectively working to make things better back in late 2004 after the newspaper ran an expose on what was going on at the local pound, and many people were outraged.

In ten years, I've seen some positive change, but certainly not enough. We're still working. Working hard. Things are better than they were ten years ago, but we're not there yet.

My personal opinion in that anything and everything that bring awareness and education to the plight of homeless animals is a GOOD thing. And I thank you for always sharing those types of stories.

Huntley came to HUA with two other lovely dogs, surrendered by their owner who advised one of our directors that if we did not take them in, he would either shoot them or dump them. It was 100 degrees that day. Obviously we were horrified. We ushered Huntley and his pals right on in the door and ushered that awful man right out the door. Huntley is all about the fun things in life. He ia a happy boy who is delighted by all of the great things at HUA. He loves playing one-sided fetch - just loves it! - so we must have a huge stockpile of toys for this event. We are trying to teach him to actually bring them back to us once he's caught them, but Huntley thinks it much more fun his way. He is a funny, active guy who appreciates everything he's been given. He is devoted to people and wants to please. He will be an awesome addition to a family who likes to enjoy the good things in life and wants to bring him with them!

His Buddies, Duane and Tina Persinger, from Papillion, NE, sent him this message: "In memory of Brie. She rescued us in 2006 but was taken far too soon. We hope Huntley can live life to the fullest the way Brie did everyday!" They share a bed and are just making the very most of their time at HUA. Cajun loves to go for walks and run in the fields. He would adore a family to call his own soon. Cajun was a stray and is very much looking forward to having a home again.

Our little cutie pie Della came to us from a home because her person was deployed overseas. She was a little out of sorts at first, understandably so. She has since learned to like it at the shelter, and we promised her we'd do everything we could to find her a new home where she will be cherished. Della still is not 100% trusting of new people, but warms up quickly and becomes very devoted. She loves playing with the other dogs and gets super excited when introduced to a new toy. She also appears to be house broken and keeps her space nice and neat. We love our little Della and nothing would make us happier than finding her forever family.

Chester is a charming fellow who loves to go on walks and follow his beagle nose. He loves treats and snuggling with the humans. He likes to cuddle up in his big dog bed for a snooze before he goes looking for more pats on the head and treats. Chester's people fell on hard times and could no longer care for him. Chester would love a home to call his own again. Chester is a male tri-colored beagle who would love to play fetch with his forever family. Tennis balls, toys - he's not picky. Just anything to play fetch with and he'll be happy! He weighs 26 pounds and was born in 2003.
