You can like her style or not, but Nadin always tries to bring us breaking news.
She's scrappy and gets out there with the camera and she is an asset to this community.
A typical OP for her:

March 25, 2013 (San Diego)Over 600 people from as far away as Brawley and Los Angeles turned out at Sundays Delivering for America rally to protest impending slashing of postal services that could leave some rural residents with no mail delivery.
Rural customers will probably feel the worst of it, George Elias, Executive Vice President, Branch 70 of the Letter Carriers Union told ECM, referring to the upcoming elimination of Saturday mail service. Moreover, Postmaster General Patrick R. Donahoe wants to stop door-to-door delivery and close some rural Post Offices, he said.
According to Jim Wazenbach, treasurer of the California State Association of Letter Carriers, clusters boxes are now the norm at new projects and may ultimately be required in existing communities. There is a concern that older or disabled people will not be able to get to them.

Ok the top photo I took as well.
And this story was just published. We lagged since we went the extra mile and asked Rep Darell Issa's office for comment. Two fold, he is the head of the proper committee and he represents parts of San Diego and Riverside counties.
This story is part of the national zeitgeist.
Enjoy.

I was telling my wife what Nadin was feeding me, and my wife was tweeting stuff about police activity to relatives in Madison, 200 miles away from us & 2,000 miles away from Nadin.

(37,573 posts)agreed with the alerter. At least the randomly chosen vote was 4-3. (Well, not quite randomly since the jury selection process favors 1) those who pay for a membership and 2) those who do not have a lot of hidden posts and 3) those who have been posting a lot. Basically the people that it should favor.)
And the hidden post certainly WAS uncivil.
But then why be civil towards "cyber bullies"?
But isn't it also somewhat disruptive to suggest that DU is somehow "rife with cyberbullies"?
Sometimes this place needs more hall monitors.
Warren Stupidity
(48,181 posts)That caused the jury system to increase the frequency of hides, which the admins have admitted happened, although they refuse to make the stats public. Why would increasing the number of hides be a good thing?

They jumped on my Op and never read it. They trashed her or hailed her, yet never read the Gawd damn Op.
I find that sad.
Here are some of her words and they break my heart.
This is what people power can do, this is what protesting can do, said Mendonca.
The march had members from different strata of San Diego society. It brought together, white, black and brown. It also brought together working class, students and middle class people.
Before the march, the protesters held a die in that lasted 11 minutes. Each minute represented each time Eric Garner said he could not breath, before he died.
It is wrong that people have been killed all over the country. Minorities who are unarmed, to sit at home and not do anything about it, and not participate, if you are not being part of the solution, you are being part of the problem.

(55,981 posts)Look at this thread. There are a lot of people here that loved her posts. If she made factual errors we are smart enough to discuss it with her in a nice way or ignore it. But not the bullies. And please don't pretend you didn't see it. The bullies use whatever advantage they can get to ridicule and mock posters. If the posters fight back, it just gives the bullies more ammunition to continue bullying.
I have seen a number of decent posters run out by the ridicule bullies. They are here to lock and hide posts as a power trip.
muriel_volestrangler

Kali
(55,007 posts)she has a good point of view and posts some good articles occasionally, but the way she treated/treats anybody that questions her or dog-forbid, corrects something she gets wrong...
arrogance and rudeness, including to the owners of this site are a big part of her problem. it isn't necessarily bullying to give back when people act like assholes.
Nobody's perfect, despite what this thread seems to make the case for.
My opinion: To use a boxing analogy she had no chin. Question her once, even innocently, and you end up on iggy.
All that being said I think she could have been treated better.
rhett o rick
(55,981 posts)That's exactly what the bullies want. Then they justify their bullying. Posters followed her post to post, ridiculing her over and over and she lashed back. Those that lash back often get PPR'd or just quit.
There is never a justification for bullying.

stevenleser
(32,886 posts)Then you typically got a nasty post back, put on her ignore list, or both.
Some of those nasty posts generated hides. I remember when she got her timeout. I checked the hidden posts. Most of them seemed deserved.
On Edit: It is amazing but the hide of Muriel's post is almost like the group of her supporters here echoed how little she seemed to tolerate criticism.
rhett o rick
(55,981 posts)to post that the victim deserved it. I probably wouldn't have voted to hide but one thing is apparent here is that there are a lot of posters that are tired of the bullies. Them and their obsessive alerts and grave dancing over PPR's. In my opinion their behavior is not appropriate for a "politically liberal" message board. I have commented to them that ridicule and mocking is not appropriate and I get the response of "they deserved it". That's a bully's typical response. All bullies think that their victims "deserve it".

http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1002&pid=5930516
REASON FOR ALERT
This post is disruptive, hurtful, rude, insensitive, over-the-top, or otherwise inappropriate.
ALERTER'S COMMENTS
It's not fair to bash a DUer (who is still a member here) without her being here to defend herself.
JURY RESULTS
You served on a randomly-selected Jury of DU members which reviewed this post. The review was completed at Mon Dec 8, 2014, 08:16 PM, and the Jury voted 4-3 to HIDE IT.
Juror #1 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: This is a ridiculous alert. There is no attack and nothing over the top.
Juror #2 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: The "She started it" tone of the post.... as a point in an argument, reminds me of a late Duers reflection of DU as sometimes like a middle school lunch room.
Juror #3 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: If it were me, and I couldn't respond to a defaming post or defend myself, I'd want it hidden too.
Juror #4 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #5 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: I'm all for transparency, but this is a flat out call out. I hate to hide but call outs are prohibited.
Juror #6 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE

(48,181 posts)That's the point. It became completely broken when the admins put an irresistible bounty on getting a hide: if you score the 5th hide you get the victim evicted for 90 days. So now we have everyone alerting on anything one of their "enemies" posts, if they can figure out any possible way of making it look bad. And why not? The penalty for not getting a hide is nearly nonexistent while the reward can be spectacular.

Inevitably, if the forum is big enough, there will be a clique of inquisitors, aka Internet bullies or trolls, who not only disagree with what you say, but more importantly your right to say it in the first place. The biggest mistake any forum adminstrator can make is to set up a system that empowers such people.

You are asserting that you got to see them and offering that as factual proof. Factual proof in this case requires more than your say so, it requires statistics. What percentage of her posts received an SOP alert? She posted a lot so it makes sense that more of her posts would be alerted than someone who posts 100 posts in 90 days.

(44,228 posts)Many of the decisions depended on who authored the thread being alerted, or who made the alert.
It's no secret that there were posters whose alerts were routinely ignored, simply because of who they were. The merit of the alert had nothing to do with the decisions of some Hosts.
Thankfully, those days are gone. The Hosting set-up put in place earlier this year seems to be working great.

(47,209 posts)alerter- and claimed they were part of a group that should be ignored. Funny how that worked.
And right after I wrote about it, I started to get alert stalked.
Warren Stupidity
(48,181 posts)And you don't understand, it seems, the difference between an SOP and a CS alert. Skinner cited some stats for CS alerts, not for SOP alerts. Only original posts can be SOP alerted, and all I can do is relate my subjective experience as a GD host: her op's in GD got SOP alerted a lot, by a small handful of people, some of whom were hosts. She had a hate club. You can continue to deny that but that is what happened. She was bullied out of here. She is not the only one.
SidDithers
(44,228 posts)some GD Hosts enforced a special set of rules when it came to nadin's OPs.. The General Discussion SOP didn't really apply to her threads, and her off-topic posts and local news stories were left unlocked, when similar posts from other DUers were locked up tight.
There used to be a real double standard in Hosting. Thankfully, it appears to be much better now that there's a single group of Hosts for all of the main Forums, and the criteria for Hosting has been tightened up.

(26,325 posts)And other DUers had their local news stories "locked up tight" in GD?
When was there ever an SOP rule about no local news stories in GD? Not LBN, GD.
Answer: there never was.

2. There was a big fire up Lytle Creek years ago that destroyed many homes and killed people.
I know you have started posting about fires just to mock another DUer. You might rethink how you amuse yourself, and at whose expense.
The guy who alerted on all her local fire stories started posting local fire stories and got shut down because hosts saw through the bullshit.
You (not you, but other people reading this thread) can see from the contemporaneous thread comments other DUers knew EXACTLY what was going on with this thread -

For people not familiar with the host forum and how it works. Some times, when a DUer wants to get a thread locked, they will post copycats to drive the issue. Hosts will get fed up and "lock them all" - which was the ultimate goal anyway.
Sometimes they will even kick a day old thread to stir it up a little to make sure they all get locked. Unless maybe I'm misreading this and the 'kicker' really has an interest in 24 hour old 'local' threads they claim to despise.

(48,181 posts)And disagreement is what makes a discussion board fun. The jury system was tolerable until the ridiculous ban hammer was introduced. The admins should look at the data and realize that they have just maybe done something wrong. Either shitcan the ban hammer or make it a whole lot less of a target for factional feud warriors. I suggest shitcan it, re-open meta, which served a useful purpose as a place to contain "discussions about the discussion" and stop worrying that people are having heated discussions. But they aren't going to do that and I think DU is just going to slowly fade away.

(1,596 posts)I have no clue why the admin thought this was a good idea. It just pisses people off - especially if the hides were not 'in good faith', which run over 50% or so - it's too much about retaliation and pay back and I'll get you for posting anti-Hillary stuff or anti-Snowden stuff or pro Obama stuff, and the list goes on. Admin seems to think that mature adults roam these halls, but look at any thread where there is a dust up and you can clearly see that is not the case.

I myself left here for quite some time, when I came back we were in sync again. I guess we're a dying breed, but she contributed so much of herself and her life to all she sees.
I will miss her, but regardless of who or what others did to make her leave, all I can say is "FOR SHAME!"

(68,644 posts)She also has family with history in Nazi concentration camps, IIRC.
Some the nasty remarks around this part of her life that were not hidden by juries contributed to her finding other things to do.
A person who becomes the object of bullies and haters can't rely on juries when juries are made up partly of bullies and haters.
But I digress. This thread is to celebrate her contributions, which continue even if not submitted directly by her.

I don't blame her one bit for leaving. It was literally years of obnoxious bullying and if some think that her own attitude contributed to such nasty treatment, well, I call bullshit. You can only kick someone for so long before they learn to bite back, with a vengeance.
