Allen West explains why he was correct in calling Dems communists

because, you know, Woodrow Wilson was a communist

---
“No, I don’t regret it whatsoever,” West said. “And I think that if you would take the time to study the political spectrum of ideologies, you’d understand that at the turn of the century, American Communists renamed themselves as progressives. If you study the Woodrow Wilson administration, people referred to the Woodrow Wilson administration as a progressive administration.

----

West also challenged his opponents to a debate: “And I would welcome anyone, to have a discussion, and a debate about political ideology. Because when you look at what’s happened in this country right now, you tell me that this government is not nationalizing production: automobile industry, financial sector, health care, cap and trade, and not going through the legislative process — look at what they’re doing through the EPA, as far as the energy sector. Look at what’s happening with the National Labor Relations Board. Who would have ever though we would live in the United States of America, where the federal government would be telling a private-sector organization where they can relocate?”

When a reporter followed up and challenged West on whether he truly believes that his opponents believe in radical political philosophies, West became visibly upset. “I just went down the line and gave you examples of legislation,” he said, launching into another onslaught about how more people have gone on food stamps in the last few years and firing a gun by the reporter's ear.

2. Heh, heh, "firing a gun by the reporter's ear"

Isn't it strange how that courageous action from Mr. West's military career isn't brought up every time this bull goose loony appears on the public airwaves? As for a discussion and a debate, Mr. West, only if it was moderated by someone who had the means to make sure it wasn't just a session of you shouting over me. I'm thinking a couple of alligator clips and some electrical leads. Just to ensure fairness and balance.

And sent U.S. troops into combat against Bolsheviks in the Russian Civil War at Archangel, and occupation duties in Siberia?

underlying logical assumptions, which may be valid or not, inherent in communication.

19. I agree.

Every time one of these "people" use these labels and words interchangeably, I want to point them to a dictionary. Not solely for the purpose of looking up the dictionary definition, but to read the etymology of said word. Knowing the history of a word is at least as important as its full definition, and gives one a much better idea of how to make use of it properly

progressive (adj.)
c.1600, "characterized by advancement" (in action, character, etc.), from progress + -ive. Of taxation, from 1889; of jazz, from 1947. Meaning "characterized by striving for change and innovation, avant-garde, liberal" is from 1908; the noun in this sense is first attested 1865. Related: Progressively.

communism
"social system based on collective ownership," 1843, from Fr. communisme (c.1840) from commun (O.Fr. comun; see common) + -isme. Originally a theory of society; as name of a political system, 1850, a translation of Ger. Kommunismus (itself from French), in Marx and Engels' "Manifesto of the Communist Party." Cf. communist. In some cases in early and mid-20c., a term of abuse implying anti-social criminality without regard to political theory.

Each {i.e. socialism, communism, anarchism} stands for a state of things, or a striving after it, that differs much from that which we know; & for many of us, especially those who are comfortably at home in the world as it is, they have consequently come to be the positive, comparative, & superlative, distinguished not in kind but in degree only, of the terms of abuse applicable to those who would disturb our peace. {Fowler}

21. Wow! Love that {Fowler} bit!! I need some time to groke that more fully.

state of things = in flux;
striving = not just something that absolutely is, more the doing of it in process;
differs much from that which we know = how much=essentially, in WHAT precise manner;
at home in the world as it is = rather than as we are told that it is, or instead of our delusions and illusions about that world, a.k.a. ideologies;
- and most especially -
come to be the positive, comparative, & superlative ... of the terms of abuse applicable to those who would disturb our peace = resolution to so much that the status quo, to our GREAT disadvantage, leaves soooooooooooooo ambiguous and, hence, under the control of others.

22. I wish there was a link to who this Fowler is,

so I could look up more of his or her thoughts

Another thing to consider that could deflect the potentially insulting aspect of the word "progressive" when used that way would be to state "I am progressive" instead of "I am a progressive." While we are most likely the latter, using it as an adjective instead of a noun allows you to deflect the insult, and (possibly) put the conservative on the defensive

24. I like the way that statement is more active, un-mediated by a something-else. It's the nature of

what you DO, not something conferred on you by anything else, a party, an authority, any TPB.

One's BEING progresses.

10. ok let me get this straight

he was talking about the Congressional Progressive Caucus, and now he's talking about all this legislation that's being passed? Does the CPC drive the agenda in Congress? Lynn Woolsey is a major power broker?

I know what I'm doing is absurd, applying logic to something Allen West is saying.

all over his sandwich board. It would be easier to ignore him. But there's no way one could debate that. He's Michelle Bachmann with a 90s haircut and a slightly more extensive vocabulary.

I hear the private sector did business with the bolsheviks, so they must have made some profit then. Some in the private sector also did business with hitler (and not just for the money, some believed in hitler's shite).

Yeah, those corporations haven't been making any money; they haven't increased their profits at all. If I ask why labor pay hasn't kept up with corporate profits, you think old west will call me a commie?

32. I was particularly struck by how free-flowing his spiel was when Soledad brought up the subject --

as though he has memorized his talking points.

Knowing how unreputable Fixed News is & the ethics trouble its owner is having in Great Britain, it wouldn't surprise me if Allen West were being used as their tool to create sensationalistic tv coverage for its gullible viewers. The Republican voters are clearly not happy with the candidate they got stuck with; I could see Fixed News arranging for this type of drama in order to rile up some passion & fear for ratings & to keep their hate-addicted viewers in line & determined to vote against their self interests.
