Even video showing misogyny is racist

The "Walking In New York" video that has gone viral isn't really an accurate portrail of what happened. The director admits to editing out white men

We got a fair amount of white guys, but for whatever reason, a lot of what they said was in passing, or off camera. So their scenes were a lot shorter, but the numbers themselves are relatively even,’ he said.

This is a perfect example about how subtle racial biases can be.
This guy might not be maliciously racist, but defending it rather than acknowledging the very real racist implications is revealing.

It is also a clear example of how racism is reflected more broadly in entertainment media.

it actually occurred to me that there were very few white guys in it. Since that's who has usually acted like that to me, I was surprised. But it never occurred to me that a video showing misogyny would be racist. You just kind of assume that people who can recognize the one, would recognize the other.

Shameful

I used to. But, I notice it when it comes to ableism as well. It's another beef I have with entertainment media. So many criminals and villains are described as having mental illnesses. Likewise, people of color are very over represented as suspects and criminals in crime dramas.
It was very noticeable when I watched a Law & Order marathon recently.

But thinking back, yeah, Law & Order often had either insane people or people of color as the bad guy. Or both.

Damn, watch a Dick Van Dyke show and watch how they treat the women. Or any sitcom from that era.

We're a nation of bigots, racists and misogynists and it doesn't seem to have an end.

From the Slate article linked within the one in your OP:

A really good video about catcalling actually already exists. In “Jessica’s Feminized Atmosphere,” Jessica Williams of the Daily Show covers the whole range of street harassment, from construction workers (of all races) to security guards to Wall Street “douche bags” to teenagers hanging on the corner. She and a group of women lay down pins on places in New York to avoid and by the end, the entire map is covered. There are race and class issues latent in her video, too. She is black, and the women she gathers for her discussion group are all races. But you don’t leave with that icky impression of a white woman under assault by the big bad city. Plus, she has the group demonstrate the armor they wear while walking down the street, which turns into a glorious mosaic of bitch face.

Unfortunately, when I try to watch the Daily Show clip it says "Sorry, but this video is unavailable. But at least you have kangaroos and boomerangs"

I know that sounds overly complicated and not worth the trouble, but I use http://hola.org/ which is just a browser plug in and works great.

I use it for my BBC habit and it works very well, I'm sure it would work for accessing Comedy Central and other US stuff while you're not out boomeranging (can that even be a verb?) koalas.

I had shared that video everywhere, but it is wrong to try to further the interests of any discriminated against group by discriminating against another vulnerable group.

Unless they are unedited, obviously, we can't.

It is a shame. It just really is a horrible thing to do. It so cheapens everything about it, including his girlfriend and what he finds acceptable to be said to his girlfriend. The racism propagated is despicable

I shared it also. Now I wish I hadn't. The Daily Show one is much better.

Here's another post on this that has everything in the OP. Did a better job than I. I wasn't aware of the Daily show video when I initially posted. Nor was I able to find it all in one piece

17. Saying Feminism Shouldn’t Discuss Race Doesn’t Make Any Sense
Fri Oct 31, 2014, 05:14 PM

"Isn't more inclusive to focus on people instead of individual groups" may sound good, but the whole idea behind advocating for equal rights is to acknowledge and address the differences in how people are treated.

There is a long and troubled history of white feminists in the movement asking women of color not to focus on race. “Why do you need to divide us like that? Feminism is about all women, so we shouldn’t focus on one particular group!”

Man people are alerted on everything anymore. Ridiculous!

Which one was alerted? The OP or the comment?

I also saw there were 287 replies but only 2 recs. I don't understand that either. If I go to a post and agree with it and find it either well written and/or informative, I rec it. If I comment on it, I rec it. If it disgusts me, I usually just leave it. Convince a man against his will, he'll have the same opinion still.

Sorry I missed the post.

Thanks for sharing that.
