National Cat Day: Good Time To Adopt
Happy National Cat Day! October 29th is a day to celebrate cats and help find them forever homes. Cats Cradle Shelter in Fargo hopes to do that everyday.
Cats Cradle Shelter rescues, cares fro and place cats for adoption. Their mission statement says they want to create a more humane and compassionate world for every cat. The shelter says they are nearly always full with cats of all ages, colors and breeds.
Cats Cradle has helped rescue cats from being euthanized from all three pounds in the F-M area. They now hope they can decrease the number they have in their shelter and in foster homes by finding loving families for them.

Once uploaded, click on your photo
Once the photo comes up click on the box on the right that says "Direct"
That copies a link to your photo.
Go back to DU and paste that link into the reply box.
Hope this helps.

(18,219 posts)Sadly, he was found at 6 months old, but was very long-haired. It was enough hair that sex was not obvious and the person who found him and asked if I would take him told me it was a girl. So I didn't bother checking closely. I had him scheduled for a spay with the vet when I noticed him licking "something". Oh my.

(1,421 posts)The vet fixed the mother, raised the kittens then neutered/spayed and then adopted out. They had done this so many time that they had saturated the market. We found out about them and adopted Jake then went back for Zach then we felt bad that poor Walter was alone. They had lived in the vet's office for 9 months before we adopted them.

Cali is a long-haired torti that we rescued, pregnant with her third litter, from one of my son's friends. She has now been spayed, and her kittens have homes. We love her- she is a cuddly, quiet, lap-warming ball of purr. Our other cats HATE her. She would be SO much happier in a home where she is the only kitty. . . . If you know anyone in Arkansas that needs somebody to love, pm me.

(202,970 posts)I discovered him one night in the middle of August when I stopped by the grocery store to pick up a few things - a store where they're doing major construction. I talked to a few of the construction guys who told me he'd been there for a few days and a couple of them had tried to catch him, but he bit one of them. I couldn't just leave him there, so I went back, brought tuna, a towel and a cat carrier, and the thought definitely went through my mind that I wished I could have called you for advice!
But I was in luck! The employees also knew about him and this wonderful young couple helped me, a guy who worked there and his wife who had come to pick him up. They were just terrific! She had a basket, he had gloves, and they didn't give up - this little guy was determined and he was fast - still is, LOL.
I took him to my vet the next day and he said the little one is male, was about 7 weeks and healthy, gave him initial inoculations, so I now have a kitten of my own. I've adopted cats before (including my beloved namesake, Rhiannon, who was also black, long haired, with a bit of white on her chest), but I've never had a kitten, so I could use any advice you can spare. He's adorable, but is a little maniac!
First pix:
joeybee12
(56,177 posts)When you find kittens like that, they are most likley from a stray mom and you're their first human contact, and it's completely new...the more you hug him, the happier he'll be and will be better around people...be warned...male kittens are absolute terrors! My females all calm down after a year, but males take 2!! Also, you did the right thing keeping him in that cage for a while...the smaller the area, the more secure they feel...I'm sure that helped socialize him.
Rhiannon12866
(202,970 posts)He is quite a handful - climbs everywhere and uses his claws. He's also not averse to biting, though he is getting better. I also got a crate - never used one for a cat, but did for my puppy - with his food and water dishes and his box (he's excellent at using the box). He spends nights in there so we can sleep, and also when he needs a time out when I've needed to pry him off the ceiling, LOL. He's actually been very good about it.
All he really wants to do is play, and the dogs are fine with him, but he really can be a little terror. I had a good feeling when the vet first took him out of the carrier, petted him, and he immediately started purring.
He also has lots of toys and I've discovered that videos are easier to take of him than still pix.
joeybee12
(56,177 posts)My experience is that for the first year their brains are teflon and dont learn that you don't want them doing certain...they catch on at about 1 year.
Rhiannon12866
(202,970 posts)If he's decided to climb up somewhere, he can't tell the difference between a chair or table leg, or one belonging to a person.
joeybee12
(56,177 posts)my attention when she wanted to eat...I yelled at her each time...she eventually got it...she started very young, so it didn't hurt, but I didn't want her to get into the habit!
Rhiannon12866
(202,970 posts)Or maybe they just look huge because they're white in his black feet. But they're very sharp. I keep meaning to get him a scratching post, but he still can't tell the difference between the chair leg and mine. It's not like he does it to be mean, he just can't tell, LOL. And he really does like to climb. He's very smart, can figure out where things are, so he just goes and gets them. I forgot that when I cleaned out his crate earlier I had stuck one of his favorite toys on a pile of stuff and neglected to put it back, just heard bells ringing because he'd climbed up to get it... He knows when things are his and is very possessive.
It was this toy...
