Jake Halpern's book, Bad Paper, is an amazing look into the debt

collection industry. It is the dark, dark side of seedy collections. I am watching him discuss it on Book TV and the need for more regulation of debt collectors should be priority for the Consumer Protection Agency.

The Federal Trade Commission receives more complaints about rogue debt collecting than about any activity besides identity theft. Dramatically and entertainingly, Bad Paper reveals why. It tells the story of Aaron Siegel, a former banking executive, and Brandon Wilson, a former armed robber, who become partners and go in quest of “paper”—the uncollected debts that are sold off by banks for pennies on the dollar. As Aaron and Brandon learn, the world of consumer debt collection is an unregulated shadowland where operators often make unwarranted threats and even collect debts that are not theirs.

Problem is, many people do not know the laws, thus do not report unscrupulous debt collectors.
It does appear that once debt collectors think you do know the laws, they tend to abide by it, since someone could sue them for breaking the law.

thus, if anyone is being harassed by debt collectors, google the law and defend your rights.
