"I don't need a semi-automatic rifle to shoot a duck. Maybe you do"

Rep. Nolan, Mills spar over guns, taxes, health care
It’s the only scheduled debate in 8th District race, Minnesota’s hottest.

.........

On guns, Mills touted his “A” rating by the National Rifle Association and said Nolan’s positions on restricting semi-automatic weapons and limiting magazine capacities were not in line with the district’s values.

“We need to enforce the laws we currently have rather than making up new ones,” Mills said.

Said Nolan to Mills: “I don’t need a semi-automatic rifle to shoot a duck. Maybe you do. Maybe you should spend more time on your shooting range.”

... I think his point might have been that no one needs an assault rifle for anything other than assaulting. They aren't hunting weapons. He may not have gotten it right in the context he used it, but his point was valid. If he had said "I don't need an assault rifle to to hunt game, maybe you do..." there wouldn't be a kerfuffle about it.

on a class of weapon -- semi-auto rifles -- that have been in the field (hunting land animals) for over a century. I have a .22 semi-auto that was built in 1905. Another, the Remington Model 8, is a big-caliber rifle used in deep wood/brush conditions since 1909; in fact, this early big-game rifle was modified for law enforcement use, and not the other way around. Nowadays, the "assault weapon" (the same old semi-auto class of weapons) is re-calibrated for hunting, esp. feral hogs. Nothing new, except the wizz-bang sighting systems.

I prefer pump action SHOTGUNS for bird hunting: It's the legal thing to do.

but the big slam came when Nolan, responding to claims by Mills that he treats their workers well, said "I have spoken to one of your workers and he calculated that he would have to work 34 years to make what Mills makes in one."

I was an interesting debate. Mills had to take on two liberals Nolan and an American Indian candidate for the Green party(Ray Sandman). Sandman was quite good.

It was also probably the first time a candidate used the word "turd" in a debate. Nolan was concerned about water quality. "We used to have condoms and turds floating in the river."

I love the Browning Auto 5 though as a waterfowl gun. Such a nice, well made, shotgun for hunting upland birds and hardly kicks at all.

That's especially true in Nolan's district. What Stewart Mills doesn't get is that Nolan has supported hunting for just about ever. Restrictions on firearms for hunting are already on the books. For example, the shotgun you use for ducks and other game birds are restricted to magazines that hold only 3 shells. Since most shotguns are built with 5-round magazines, you have to use a rod that restricts their a capacity. Nobody hunts ducks with any sort of rifle.

For large game, hunters are restricted by the caliber of the rifle, if a rifle is used. Nothing less than .223 caliber can be used for deer, for example.

Existing laws already include many restrictions. Mills is an overgrown, narcissistic frat boy. That is what will keep him from winning that race. He's smarmy and self-absorbed.

the MN-8th district. Nolan should not have made this comment. I don't know the context, but he made his race closer by saying it. The hunting 'culture' in the 8th is a pretty big deal. Rod Grams was elected to the senate because his Democrat opponent expressed her supoort for gun control and for the first time, a Republican won the 8th in a statewide race. That was 20 years ago, but I'm quite sure the seniments are still nearly the same.

Most gun owners don't hunt. Trying to shame someone with a crack about hunting prowess when nobody is talking about hunting really is the essence of just how out of touch they are. Furthermore, I wonder what sort of rifle Mr. Nolan uses to hunt ducks.

I couldn't give a fuck about hunting. Trying to shame me over how many shots I use to take down all the ducks
I've never hunted (with a rifle, of all things) speaks loads.

The so called Assault Weapons Bans and mag bans have virtually nothing to do with hunting.

"I don't need a semi-automatic rifle to hunt duck" must sound awfully stupid to most Minnesota gun owners - especially duck hunters.

Wild animals don't shoot back so why does a hunter need a big ass magazine and rapid fire anyway?
