The DUzy Awards for Friday, April 13th, 2012

Last edited Fri Apr 13, 2012, 10:07 PM - Edit history (2)

WELCOME to the DUZY AWARDS!

Your Friday night showcase of DU’s funniest comments! At least, if all goes well.

DuzyMaster Note: Hey, not a lot of nominations this week. Get cracking, DUers, or I’ll be forced to fill the empty spaces with pictures from my vacation to Big Earl’s Geriatric Body-Waxing Emporium and Day Spa Resort.

How it works:

You see a funny post and you want to put it in contention. Great! Send a private-message to “The DUzy Awards” and include a link to the original post and the # of the reply you want to nominate, and then copy-and-paste the OP and the nominated post into the message. That’s in case of a self-deletion or an edit or something.

If a member’s name is in purple text, then that member has won a DUzy for the week.

If text is in red italicized text that’s a comment from me.

See the Elephant Face on Mars

NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter has captured an elephant on Mars — well, actually, it's an elephant-shaped lava flow in Elysium Planitia on Mars.

The picture provides one more Martian example of the phenomenon known as "pareidolia," in which our eyes and brain can be coaxed to see familiar patterns in unfamiliar settings. Pareidolia is the best explanation for the Face on Mars, the Mermaid on Mars ... and even the Happy Face on Mars.

The Elephant Face on Mars also provides a glimpse of the geological changes that shaped the Red Planet over the course of billions of years.

"Flood lavas cover extensive areas, and were once thought to be emplaced extremely rapidly, like a flood of water," University of Arizona planetary geologist Alfred McEwen, the principal investigator for the orbiter's HiRISE camera, wrote in an image advisory issued on Wednesday.

Daymn Woman rips off mans scrotum
Talk about a ball buster.

An Indiana man was rushed to the hospital Wednesday after his scrotum was the victim of a vicious attack by an ex-girlfriend, The Smoking Gun reports.

The victim told police that his former girlfriend, Christina Reber, stormed into his apartment as he was innocently sitting at his computer. Reber, who he had severed ties with a few days earlier, first struck him on the head and then grabbed his scrotum and began “squeezing as hard as she could.” Naturally, he told officers that he “was in incredible pain when grabbed his scrotum and began digging in her fingers.”

Google Begins Testing Its Augmented-Reality Glasses!
^^ One of the dozens of designs being tested. Google says multiple designs, some which can be worn over regular glasses will be available.

^^ Contact lenses with built in screens under development.

If you venture into a coffee shop in the coming months and see someone with a pair of futuristic glasses that look like a prop from “Star Trek,” don’t worry. It’s probably just a Google employee testing the company’s new augmented-reality glasses.

On Wednesday, Google gave people a clearer picture of its secret initiative called Project Glass. The glasses are the company’s first venture into wearable computing. The glasses are not yet for sale. Google will, however, be testing them in public.

In a post shared on Google Plus, employees in the company laboratory known as Google X, including Babak Parviz, Steve Lee and Sebastian Thrun, asked people for input about the prototype of Project Glass. Mr. Lee, a Google product manager and originally worked on Google mapping software Latitude, mobile maps and indoor maps, is responsible for the software component and the location-based aspects of the glasses.

“We’re sharing this information now because we want to start a conversation and learn from your valuable input,” the three employees wrote. “Please follow along as we share some of our ideas and stories. We’d love to hear yours, too. What would you like to see from Project Glass?”

This is truly amazing, and innovative. This invention comes from the secret Google X labs, which also produced the Google self driving car currently under testing.

Autopsy scheduled for painter Thomas Kinkade

Sun Apr 8, 2012 9:35pm EDT

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A California coroner is due to conduct an autopsy of Thomas Kinkade on Monday, three days after the famed American painter died unexpectedly, the Los Angeles Times reported on Sunday.

Kinkade, whose luminescent, homespun scenes captivated millions even as critics scoffed, died alone at his home in Los Gatos in northern California of apparently natural causes, according to family spokesman David Satterfield. Kinkade was 54.

The Santa Clara County coroner will perform the autopsy. Officials have offered no further details on the case.

Kinkade claimed to be America's most collected living artist, his prints hanging in the homes of an estimated 10 million Americans. He was a Christian who often depicted scenes from the Bible, and his work expressed a wholesome idealism.

Supreme Court Agrees to Reconsider Citizens United
(Newser) – The Supreme Court has agreed to take a case that justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Stephen Breyer say will give it a chance to rethink its infamous Citizens United v. FEC decision. The court is being asked to look into a Montana Supreme Court decision stating that its law restricting corporate election spending in state elections is fine, because it "arises from Montana history," UPI reports. Essentially, Montana is arguing that Citizens United only applies to federal laws and elections, not state ones.

Two Montana corporations are asking the court to make a summary judgment to the contrary; their lead counsel argues that otherwise, "free speech will be seriously harmed," because states anywhere could "ban core political speech." But Ginsburg and Breyer earlier wrote that the case "will give the Court an opportunity to consider whether, in light of the huge sums currently deployed to buy candidates' allegiance, Citizens United should continue to hold sway."

Zimmerman's brother, just on Piers Morgan, claimed that Trayvon had his hands over George's nose and
mouth George was about to pass out. He claims that is why George feared for his life and Trayvon was shot. But didn't we hear somebody yelling for help for 40 seconds before the shot? How could you yell help if you were about to pass out from lack of oxygen?

(moved from forums where it was mistakenly posted).

Iran To Shut Down Internet Permanently; 'Clean' National Intranet In Pipeline
Source: International Business Times

Millions of Internet users in Iran will be permanently denied access to the World Wide Web and cut off from popular social networking sites and email services, as the government has announced its plans to establish a national Intranet within five months.

In a statement released Thursday, Reza Taghipour, the Iranian minister for Information and Communications Technology, announced the setting up of a national Intranet and the effective blockage of services like Google, Gmail, Google Plus, Yahoo and Hotmail, in line with Iran's plan for a "clean Internet."

The government is set to roll out the first phase of the project in May, following which Google, Hotmail and Yahoo services will be blocked and replaced with government Intranet services like Iran Mail and Iran Search Engine. At this stage, however, the World Wide Web, apart from the aforementioned sites, will still be accessible.

The government has already started the registration procedure to apply for procuring Iran Mail ID, which mandates authentic information pertaining to a person's identity, including national ID, address and full name. Registration will be approved only after verifying it against the government data on the particular applicant.

Chris Christie Calls Americans Couch Potatoes
Personally, I hate when writers take cheap shots at New Jersey Governor Chris Christie’s weight, because, well, it’s cheap. There is so much more to criticize him for. But when he accuses the rest of America of being couch potatoes? Come on Christie! Think before you speak. Okay. I’ll refrain. There is plenty to address on his words alone.

In a speech to a group that is frighteningly and unironically called, the Bush Institute Conference on Taxes and Economic Growth, Christie said that he had “never seen a less optimistic time in my lifetime.”

“I think it’s really simple. It’s because government’s now telling them ‘stop dreaming, stop striving, we’ll take care of you.’ We’re turning into a paternalistic entitlement society,” Christie explained.

“That will not just bankrupt us financially, it will bankrupt us morally because when the American people no longer believe that this a place where only their willingness to work hard and to act with honor and integrity and ingenuity determines their success in life then we’ll have a bunch of people sittin’ on a couch waiting for their next government check.”

Here are some of my favorite exercises!

Begin by holding up one finger for as long as you can!

If that's a bit too challenging at first, begin by just lifting that finger as far as seems comfortable. Push it up with your thumb if need be!

Strengthen the fingers one by one: soon you'll be lifting three!

As motivation -- look! I can lift four!

Holy Shit! Jan Brewer actually signed it. Life now begins 2 weeks before conception in Arizona.
That's right, boys and girls. In Arizona Mr. Sperm doesn't even have to encounter Ms. Egg in order for Arizona Repugs to insert themselves into a woman's reproductive process. According to the law that Brewer signed, gestational age now is deemed to have begun on the first day of the last menstrual period of a pregnant woman. Abso-fucking-lutely IMPOSSIBLE, you say? Nope. In Arizona if you become pregnant, then by law it happened two weeks before you actually had intercourse.
You can't make this shit up.

6. P.S. I wasn't here yet, but 2002 was the best election because there was an epic cull.
Some time before the election, a bunch of people got tombstoned for supporting the Green Party or basically doing things detrimental to the Democrats. I can understand why that would be done then and not now (there's a lot more to lose if it causes a mutiny), but I think if it had been consistently done from then until now, we'd have a much more Democratic Democratic Underground, which may have even turned out bigger.

Did anyone ever save that list of translations of common science article phrases/
I remember a few items, but the list was pretty long.

--"Thanks to Joe Blow for skilled technical assistance and Jane Doe for valuable discussion" Joe Blow did all the work and Jane Doe told me what it meant.

--"typical results are shown" The best results are shown.

stc, etc.

Jumping John
A Translation of common Scientific Research Phrases

This list of phrases and their translations might help you understand the mysterious language of science in general and medicine / biology specifically. These special phrases are also applicable to anyone working on a Ph.D. dissertation or academic paper at a university anywhere on earth.

Research Phrases Translation / Meaning

It has long been known ... I didn't look up the original reference.

A definite trend is evident ... These data are practically meaningless.

Of great theoretical and practical importance ... Interesting to me.

While it has not been possible to provide definite answers to these questions ... An unsuccessful experiment, but I still hope to get it published.

Three of the samples were chosen for detailed study ... The results of the others didn't make any sense.

Typical results are shown ... This is the prettiest graph.

These results will be shown in a subsequent report... I might get around to this sometime, if I'm pushed / funded.

The most reliable results are those obtained by Jones ... He was my graduate assistant.

It is believed that... I think.

It is generally believed that ... A couple of other people think so, too.

It is clear that much additional work will be required before a complete understanding of the phenomenon occurs ... I don't understand it.

Correct within an order of magnitude ... Wrong.

In my experience ... Once.

In case after case ... Twice.

In a series of cases ... Thrice.

According to statistical analysis. Rumor has it.

A statistically oriented projection of the significance of these findings. A wild guess.

Thanks are due to Joe Blotz for assistance with the experiment and to George Frink for valuable discussions ... Blotz did the work and Frink explained to me what it meant.

A careful analysis of obtainable data... Three pages of notes were obliterated when I knocked over a glass of wine.

It is hoped that this study will stimulate further investigation in this field ... I quit.

How Come People Who See UFO's Nowadays See Black Traingles and Not Typical Flying Saucers?
In another forum we got talking about Coast to Coast AM and I got to thinking. How come all UFO sighting people see today are now black triangles? Does anyone see the classic saucer shaped UFO's anymore? I personally think the black triangles are ours and not anything paranormal. It just seems like no one see's any classic saucers or cigar shape crafts anymore. Then again, I am not sure what people outside the USA are seeing.

Back in the day it was all analog and the curves were more obvious. But today it's digital and the flying crafts are compressed using the MPEG format so there is more pixelization rendering a blockier image.

14. Thanks. I needed that.

I had lunch with 3 wingnuts today who took turns with the right-wing talking points. They think after they kick Obama out they will run a system restore to the 1950's. I almost did a "duck and cover".

New one: Mini Kim had the senior engineer shot following failed rocket launch. The problem with that one is it's actually plausible.

26. I got a Duzzy!!!

Where do I pick it up or will it be cyber mailed to me and suddenly appear on my Mantle? Is there a time limit on the acceptance speech? Even more important, if I run low on cash is there a big market for selling them?

Cool I love it

28. It's a certificate

You take it down to Big Roy's Biker Bar and Tattoo Parlor in Sturgis, South Dakota and they tattoo one on the body part of your choice.

Just, um, don't stare at Big Roy.

You'll see what I mean.
