Walmart Pick-up Grocery Concept Opens

Yeah, yeah, Walmart, evil empire. Suck it. Not everything they do is awful, and I don't see Meijer or Kroger testing out these types of stores. I rather hope this concept spreads. It could be a great boon to the elderly and disabled, as well as providers of services to those groups, and those who help care for them.

It’s free to use the service and customers have to place the order at least two hours ahead of time. They can also schedule a pick up three weeks in advance.

“It’s all about, how do I find that right item that the customer is asking for as quickly as possible so that I can have that order ready when the customer arrives?” said Mitch Fevold, grocery manager.

When the customer arrives for pick-up, they drive-up to a touch screen kiosk, submit their last name, which then lets employees know the customer is ready for their items.

“The groceries are then loaded up and the customer would actually have the opportunity to review fresh products,” Fevold said.

There are no Safeways in my part of the country, so I have no experience with them. Just out of curiosity, how much of a fee do they charge?

Delivered. I don't remember exactly, but I know it was reasonable or I might not have done it with precious funds available if you know what I mean.

but it's not clear to me about the timing - if the employee doesn't begin to gather up the groceries until the person indicated at the kiosk that they have arrived, then it seems to me that it could be a fairly long wait, depending on the grocery list. Or maybe they pack the non-perishables and wait until the customer arrived to add the fresh stuff.
