Weightlifter shot when he drops dumbbell on bullet (or so he says)

Weightlifter shot when he drops dumbbell on bullet

A California weightlifter says he accidentally shot himself by dropping a dumbbell on a bullet.

The man was wounded in the shoulder.

He told Modesto police officers he was lifting dumbbells in his home Wednesday night when he dropped one on a .22 caliber bullet. The man's name hasn't been released.

Modesto police investigators say the man's story is suspicious, but not impossible.

-------------

Officers did not find a gun but did find the shell casing.

Neighbors did not see anyone leaving the man's home.

1. Ouch. Bullet must have been on a dresser or something,

and when he dropped it, it hit the primer is such a right way that it fired, hitting him in the shoulder. Stranger things have happened, I guess.

The real thing is, why keep a .22 round with no gun to shoot it? Just collects bullets?

2. I think cops think someone shot him and left with gun.

5. That's probably more likely. The physics behind what the guy claimed happened

are somewhat far fetched, if not completely unbelievable. The physics of what I said in the post you replied to are also pretty far fetched.

6. .22 rounds don't have a primer.

They're "rimfire" rounds, meaning they're set off by crushing the thin rim of the casing. According to this guy, he dropped a barbell on it and set it off. Not completely implausible, but it's highly unlikely that it would have had enough power to fly out and wound him. Individual rounds aren't very powerful outside of the pressure chamber of an actual gun.

7. Sounds like more than one dumbbell involved.

Just saying...

8. I thought that when a bullet fired outside of a gun, it doesn't go very fast.

The whole point of the chamber and barrel of the gun is to contain the explosion of the powder, and ensure that the gasses have only one way out - pushing the bullet out the end of the barrel. That's why a bullet coming out a gun is going so fast.

Without the gun, the bullet still fires, but because there's nothing containing the explosion, the bullet just doesn't get that much of a push. It'd be lucky to break skin.

I'd describe this story as mostly implausible.

10. You're exactly right.

A rifle round or something else similarly high-powered might be dangerous, but a .22 is the weakest kind of round available: even when fired out of a gun it's very low on the danger scale.

Personally, rather than "somebody shot him and ran off," I suspect this is more likely a case that the guy was handling a gun unsafely, shot himself, and then made up a less-embarrassing story to tell the emergency room workers.

12. That, and Also

the mandatory police reports on any patients treated for bullet wounds. He might have had an illegal weapon and wanted to find a way to only acknowledge owning the bullet.

15. Also quite possible.

Although I make it a point never to underestimate the stupid and ridiculous lengths people will go to, and the lies they'll tell, to avoid admitting that they did something stupid like leave the safety off.

11. Even throwing a handful of .22 shells in a burning barrel won't make them discharge like that

We used to do stupid stuff like that as kids. They'd just pop off like firecrackers, but no bullet had enough energy to so much as dent the inside of the 55-gal. drum we used to burn garbage, much less penetrate it.

Without a chamber and barrel to direct the pressure, they have very little chance of causing injury.

...only dumbbells will have to come up with new excuses for the police...or something...
