Weightlifter shot when he drops dumbbell on bullet

(04-13) 05:39 PDT Modesto, Calif. (AP) --

A California weightlifter says he accidentally shot himself by dropping a dumbbell on a bullet.

The man was wounded in the shoulder.

He told Modesto police officers he was lifting dumbbells in his home Wednesday night when he dropped one on a .22 caliber bullet. The man's name hasn't been released.

Modesto police investigators say the man's story is suspicious, but not impossible.

4. My father once told me a story of nearly getting shot in a similar manner when he was a kid..

Put a cartridge on top of a brick and hit it with a hammer, bullet and cartridge obeyed Newton's third law and parted ways at fairly high velocity, thankfully no one was hit..

The bullet or cartridge certainly wouldn't have the energy the bullet would coming out of a barrel but one of them could hit hard enough to penetrate.

Actually I heard about it more than once come to think of it, it made an impression on him.

29. I did something similar when I was a kid.

A buddy and I found a .22 bullet laying around on the street. Being good little idiots, we clamped it carefully in a vise in my garage and gave it a stern whack with a ball-peen hammer. The bullet fired and buried itself in the vacant lot across the street.

5. Yep

If a bullet is lying on the floor and for some reason you make it go off the casing is the more dangerous part as its lighter and it will go flying. The lead will remain lying on the floor more than likely. So to me it would depend on what part of the bullet hit him, they should know as it should have been still embedded in his body. I know this from personal experience when my brother and I was shooting at a live round and it went off when he hit it with our pellet gun. The lead was still laying there but the casing hit him in the chest. We were probably 20 feet or so from it when it went off. It left a bruise but that was all. Oh and two scared shitless kids, he and I

20. You can bet your ass on that

I haven't held a real gun in my hands in 40 years now. I have a co2 pellet gun that I'll occasionally plink with just to keep my eye but other than that no guns for me.

19. only if the mass of the bullet is equal or greater than the thrust od the explosion.

The case, being lighter than the bullet will accelerate faster but the bullet will fly as well.

31. I think you are right

but in my and my brothers case the lead part only moved a small distance compared to the casing. It was lying on the ground in the grass mind you so that might have made a difference.
At any rate this guy is lying his ass off is my gut feeling.

13. My thought as well

Who leaves bullets lying around? And who drops a dumbbell? Possible, but not plausible and really stupid if true.

17. Leaving loose rounds around is not bright, but firing a .22 with a dumbbell

is a completely reasonable possibility. .22's are rimfire cartridges, not centerfire.

.. it could've been a .357 or .44 magnum.
