(11,197 posts)essentially posts on DU from around 2004 by a DU'er named Minstrel Boy that made the claim in the same manner that you did here. No link, just the claim that he had said it. Minstrel Boy apparently earned himself a Tombstone on the old DU at some point in time. Not sure what name he posts under now on DU3, but if he's around perhaps he could enlighten us as to the source of this claim.

The DLC was/is in their new skin something that Dem people don't want. They are Republicans. There is a grand difference between DINO leaders and Democrat people. The DLC is associated with everything that has gone wrong with our leaders.
Like the invasion of Iraq, like torture, liek rendition, lie the Patriot Act, like Homeland Security, like the transformation of FEMA from a department that was respected to a secret and private prison facilitator, like the Coast Guard protection of BP. like moving jobs and factories out of the country, like bail-outs to ultra rich investors/bankers - like their milquetoast , be nice, lie down answers to corporate tv freaks like Hannity, O'Reilly, Beck? Become a DLC supporter. Do you like the money these leaders put in their pocket and the absolutely zero interest they have in stopping vote theft? Like the trade treaties suck out of our lives.
That is the DLC, now known as the Clinton Foundation.
The Democrat-people have each other and a few good leaders. Extract DLC members and Blue Dogs and we have little.

(46,192 posts)I'm sorry, but that's what's going on.
The OP will post partial information, perhaps true, perhaps not, and then given terse, half or one word answers to string you along and get others to reply and kick the thread.
What could have been answered in a few posts, or even in an OP with 2 more sentences and a link is instead left still unexplained, unlinked, unverified and very inflammatory 25+ posts in.
The OP is teasing you, the OP is teasing all of us.
If the topic interests you, the last place I would try to find the answer is from the OP. The OP is clearly enjoying stringing you and everybody else along hoping a few words, a cryptic reference will keep you coming back for more.
I'm not playing this and I'm not going to be silent while the OP mocks those of you who came here to have a rational discussion about an inflammatory post.

CreekDog
(46,192 posts)Well, let me explain first:
1) DLC no longer exists, so there aren't any "DLC" Democrats any longer, though there are many "centrists".
2) Al Franken is not a centrist.
3) Al Franken has never been known to be a DLC-type Democrat, in fact, quite the opposite, back in the mid-1990s when many DLCers were recommending compromise and co-opting of Republican policies, styles and talking points, Al was about the first to get widespread attention for calling the most famous Republican of that time a "big fat idiot".
4) Al Franken was key to liberals standing up for themselves within the political system and within the Democratic Party. Though he was not the only fighter, his tough and funny approach was one of the most successful. He muscled, joked and jabbed his way into the national conversation which the media was content only happen on Republican terms.
All that said, the OP wants you to know that Al Franken said he was "DLC". Why does he want you to know that? Does it make you feel good about Al Franken? Probably not. If it does make you feel good but you find out that Al Franken is probably the crappiest DLC-er ever, would you still be happy?
Since the DLC no longer exists, due to lack of interest and policy prescriptions only zombies could think up...what is the point of saying that Al Franken, a liberal, a fighter saying he's DLC?
It's to make you feel bad. Feel bad about Al Franken, feel bad about the DLC, feel bad about Democrats in general (for the doomed DLC experiment), etc. It's designed to also make you argue with other Democrats and Liberals and Centrists over a random comment that never mattered much when it was said and 8 years later is so irrelevant that it's negligible. Except the OP can use it to make you feel bad, make you argue and at the same time, get attention.
Starry Messenger
(32,342 posts)You should post it as an OP.
I would add my #5) Purpose of the OP is to suck attention away from other threads that are more deserving of attention, knowing that people will naturally labor to counter the misunderstandings caused by his postings.

DFL: This is the official name for the Democratic Party in Minnesota
If you enter any Democrats name, including Franken, in a search engine, the person will have the tag DFL after it, unless someone didn't know about the DFL and assumed DLC.
Go to the Home Page and you will see a photo of the current Governor and others and the caption say Governor and DFL Leaders. Everything is DFL in Minnesota. Since 1944. http://dfl.org
The acronym is appended to their all the names of the leaders when identifying the party affiliation of a Democrat.
http://dfl.org/introduction
"Introduction to the DFL Party
Thank you for your interest in the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party of Minnesota! Since our Party's inception on, April 15, 1944, we have continually worked to elect strong DFL candidates to public office, act as a voice for the people of our state, and to encourage all citizens to become politically active in their communities. The Minnesota DFL supports and works to enact the ideals and principles of the Democratic Party and strives to sustain the foundations in our Party's grassroots history. We believe that every American and Minnesotan, regardless of their background or other immutable traits, has a right to stable employment with fair wages, to a proper education, to raise and provide for a family, to accessible and affordable healthcare, to live in safe communities, and to retire with dignity and security. In the course of our Party's history much has been accomplished and we at the DFL Party will continue working for a better Minnesota and nation into tomorrow and beyond."
As they say, it is one thing to make a mistake and another to be a jerk about it.
But if you come up with a credible source where he says that he belonged to the DLC in 2003 or now , I will apologize for thinking of you in a very negative way.

(11,586 posts)you know - maybe he doesn't believe that anymore. It was either years ago.
I know that I spent a lot of time on this board, if not supporting, at least defending the DLC back then. I still believe they served a purpose at a particular time - however, I've come to believe they (and the newer versions, like the New Dems) no longer serve a worthwhile purpose. I feel that this particular brand of moderate Republicanism is damaging not just to the party, but to the nation as a whole.
The policies of groups like the New Dems may help win elections in certain areas, but the lack of advocating for liberal policies has contributed to a rightward drift for both the party and the country. This is bad because these policies aren't going to get us out of the mess we're in. We need liberal policies and we need liberal politicians to express them.
Listening to Al Franken recently I feel that he has arrived at that same conclusion.
