Duckworth, 46, a Democrat from Hoffman Estates running for her second term in the House, is expecting a girl, according to spokesman Anton Becker, who said the lawmaker told her staff about a month ago.
In a statement, Duckworth said: "My husband Bryan and I are thrilled to announce that we are expecting our first child later this year. We are overwhelmed by the support of our family, friends and neighbors. I look forward to continuing my work in Congress to make sure that all my constituents have the opportunity to achieve the American dream."
Her husband, Army Maj. Bryan Bowlsbey, serves at the National Guard Bureau.

(51,076 posts)I love her for what she stands for, for what she has done for what that has been done to her. She is one of my life's hero's even though I've never met her and probably never will.
You go Tammy, may your life be filled with much love and happiness.

Pregnancy after age 35 and high blood pressure are considered risk factors for expectant mothers.
I hope she does OK with this pregnancy. Wishing her the best.

(40,416 posts)I love Tammy Duckworth.
Here's her memorable 2012 Democratic Convention speech:
She is a real gem.
And Biden's reaction to her speech says it all.

(70,078 posts)honestly, that loss was prolly the best thing that ever happened to her. not for il 6th, of course, which was screwed thanks to the dccc stuffing her into a race the progressive candidate WOULD HAVE WON.
but all that aside, tammy ended up taking a really great path to congress. she is doing a great job.
love her.

(23,272 posts)And I'm not at all convinced Christine Cegelis would have won. Pete Roskam is a younger Henry Hyde ideologically and had Hyde's blessing for the seat. Dupage is so damn red, running Tammy as a moderate war vet Dem wasn't a bad choice. She almost pulled it off too.
Its interesting how many DUers have forgotten it was Rahm Emmanuel who "found" her...

(70,078 posts)true rahm was the head of dccc. but she was durbin's project.
she just came out of the gate lame. i think christine would have shown what we know now, that show leather wins. and she wore out a couple pairs of shoes. it was stupid to piss off dems instead of helping christine raise money.
but but.
happy to see tammy now. and happy about that baby. saw elsewhere that it took some serious doing to accomplish this. on top of everything else she does, including her guard duty.....
the woman is made of iron.

(3,014 posts)gives my wife and I hope.
We wanted kids. Got married in our mid 30's. Were talking about it strongly...and then shortly after getting married, the economy tanked.
Would've loved to just have kids, but both the business we worked for cut wages. We literally would've gone homeless if we had added another mouth to the household. So it became, "We just have to wait until the economy recovers.".
It became obvious quickly that neither of the companies we worked for had any interest in helping us in our lives. So last year, in our early 40's we started our own business.
The business hasn't started making enough income that we don't make enough money yet for another mouth (we should be there in 12-18 months...business is growing fast). The other factor is how busy we are to make bills (aw yes...the glory of owning your own business). It would be tough to throw a child in the mix. The good news is we just added our first employee and he's beginning to take some of that off our plate.
As it is, we should both be about 44 when we have our next shot at having a child. Oh please let the stars align. We'd really like a child.
