'Painter of Light' Thomas Kinkade, 54, dies in Los Gatos

Last edited Fri Apr 6, 2012, 11:06 PM USA/ET - Edit history (1)

The self-proclaimed most popular artist in America, "Painter of Light" Thomas Kinkade, died Friday at his Los Gatos home. He was 54.

His family said in a statement that his death appeared to be from natural causes.

"Thom provided a wonderful life for his family," his wife, Nanette, said in a statement. "We are shocked and saddened by his death."

His paintings are hanging in an estimated 1 out of every 20 homes in the United States. Fans cite the warm, familiar feeling of mass-produced works of art, while it has become fashionable for art critics to dismiss his pieces as tacky.

76. I wasn't the one who made the error; I pointed it out. See #15.

I merely defended the person who confused the two (#13) by noting that they are both schlocky artists who could be easily confused. I would also suggest that confusing Kinkade with McNaughton does not make a person "look silly and uneducated." Not only is this a gratuitous insult, inappropriate on DU, but simply wrong: Sensible, educated people, who should know the difference between Matisse and Degas, shouldn't be able to recognize either Kinkade or McNaughton in the first place since these are not respectable artists. So where does that leave all of us?

Grave dancing is disgusting. He was a PAINTER, not Dick Cheney. What that mother fucker dies, I'll post the first thread celebrating. But a painter? No way.

One of my closest friends is a gifted artist (she makes more money every year than I do. LOTS more.) She water colors in her spare time. She loves Kincaid's work and admires his marketing skills. I consider her opinion to be an expert one.

No I wouldn't hang one of his paintings in my house. But I will offer sympathy to his family.

78. He caused quite a few people financial ruin

They lost their business, their homes, everything, because he was a scam artist. He was no better than someone like Bernie Madoff, he just did it on a smaller scale. It just rubs salt into the wounds that he did it waving the flag of Good Christian Values.

I'm speaking specifically of the way he grifted his gallery owners, but he also scammed the folks who thought they were investing in original art, when they weren't. He also went on to devalue his work even more, by mass reproductions.

I am not denouncing his work, that is personal opinion, but rather his immoral and unethical character.

26. That's funny...

So, if I understand the scam, just based on inspecting these things in different galleries (first one was Carmel-by-the-Sea, of all places)...

The "paintings" are sold as originals for hundreds and thousands of dollars, but they are really prints with little "points of light" painted on them by, presumably, underfed children in underdeveloped countries.

Because no two are alike, and each one has been individually "painted", they aren't "prints", they're "originals".

Brilliant, right?

So, really, there is a circle of hell for that kind of thing, in my imagined inferno.

...he had done that really put him on my list was he'd used the Christian faith to lure a fuckload of Christians into sinking enormous sums of money into franchise stores ($150k+ each) and then undercut them on QVC. Franchise store owners won close to a $3m judgement against him for those and other shenanigans.

Oh, plus there was pissing on Winnie the Pooh at Disneyland and forcibly groping women. Not to mention the Sigfried and Roy incident.

41. Dark Portrait of a `Painter of Light'

from 2006:

Thomas Kinkade is famous for his luminous landscapes and street scenes, those dreamy, deliberately inspirational images he says have brought "God's light" into people's lives, even as they have made him one of America's most collected artists.

A devout Christian who calls himself the "Painter of Light," Kinkade trades heavily on his beliefs and says God has guided his brush -- and his life -- for the last 20 years.

<snip>

But some former Kinkade employees, gallery operators and others contend that the Painter of Light has a decidedly dark side.

In litigation and interviews with the Los Angeles Times, some former gallery owners depict Kinkade, 48, as a ruthless businessman who drove them to financial ruin at the same time he was fattening his business associates' bank accounts and feathering his nest with tens of millions of dollars.

Kinkade -- whose solely owned Thomas Kinkade Co. is based in Morgan Hill, Calif. -- denies these allegations.

Last month, however, a three-member panel of the American Arbitration Assn. ordered his company to pay $860,000 for defrauding the former owners of two failed Virginia galleries. That decision marks the first major legal setback for Kinkade, who won three previous arbitration claims. Five more are pending.

I thought it was beautiful.

When I saw the second one I thought, "Oh, that again."
By the third painting I was getting really tired of his work.

It was kind of like a painting of Elvis on black velvet in that respect. The first time you ever see one it's like "Wow! How cool!" The second time, you're already sick of seeing them.

You have to give him credit for one thing. He knew how to market "elevator music" pictures to little old ladies.

47. Dreck.

Joan Didion:

"A Kinkade painting was typically rendered in slightly surreal pastels. It typically featured a cottage or a house of such insistent coziness as to seem actually sinister, suggestive of a trap designed to attract Hansel and Gretel. Every window was lit, to lurid effect, as if the interior of the structure might be on fire."

58. I am sorry to hear it BUT he doesn't get to call himself "the painter of light".

Not even posthumosly.

61. He's the painter of shit. Little underpaid peons painted the light part.

Go to a gallery if you can bear to, and you'll see that the "paintings" are, in fact, prints with little stipples of white and yellow- highlights of actual paint applied not by him but by underpaid workers who get no credit.

The art world is a better place without that sort of shit.

63. Oh, boy. Sweatshops?

His "art" is mind numbing and I never thought much about it. But, now that you say so, it sounds about right. No wonder he raked in so much money. There's no way he could produce all those by himself.

79. That kind of thing goes way back. Plenty of artists have done more or less the same. Maybe

Kincaide's innovation was having the anonymous apprentices put their daubs on prints, but passing off the work of one's helpers as one's own after you've made your name -- long history.

62. beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

I am not a fan of his work...but others were, and that's fine.

Such a young age, condolences to his family and loved ones.

70. LOL!

Also:

During the years 1997 through 2005, court documents show at least 350 independently owned Kinkade franchises at its peak.

By May 2005, that number had more than halved.

YAY!!!
