As much as I hate this guy, I am hoping the best for his daughter, Bella
http://firstread.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2012/04/06/11056965-santorums-ailing-daughter-taken-to-hospital
Rick Santorum's daughter, Bella, afflicted with a chromosomal disorder, was taken to the hospital for the second time during this campaign. Santorum is home in Virginia for the Easter holiday. "Rick and his wife Karen have taken their daughter Bella to the hospital," Santorum Communications Director Hogan Gidley said in a statement. "The family requests prayers and privacy as Bella works her way to recovery." The Santorums have medical equipment in their Virginia home and and a nurse on call that can tend to Bella. Because of these accommodations, Bella only needs to be taken to the hospital when her condition is very serious, a person familiar with the situation told NBC News. <snip>

1. Really terrible

Poor little girl. I hate it when little kids are sick. Sadness for the whole family, and no one could wish that.

13. On the contrary
|
She's rather lucky to have the last name of Santorum. It means her family has the means and the motivation to make sure she has top-flight medical equipment, care, and none of that icky hanging around the emergency room with the hoi polloi when her condition flares up.
Now, if every citizen could have the same access to health care, I'd feel bad for Bella's choice of family. |

miscarried baby, I would be very traumatized. This isn't want normal parents do to their kids. Sure money can buy access to anything, but this is why we need universal health care so everyone's child can have the same access to health care that his daughter gets.

16. Seriously. If she had the last name of about 99% of the other folks here in the USA
|
she would have died ages ago because of not being able to afford all these medical perks.
If Rick Santorum was president, children like Bella born in working class homes would have been dealt to their own personal 'death panel' That's the GOP way! |

22. Not really. Those with Trisomy 18 rarely survive to age 10, no matter how much care they receive.

But I'd still bet a shiny nickel that young Bella will have a far more comfortable life and far better treatment while she's here than she would if her ZIP code was, say, 90220.

Who knows why they named her that? Maybe someone important in one of their lives was named Bella. Regardless, I don't think this is the best time to be taking issue with the possible correlation between a sick child's name and a pop-culture obsession.

18. I am sorry for their troubles.
|
There are few things harder for a parent to bear than the suffering of a child. But, my wish for the Santorum family is that their hearts would open to the many thousands, millions even, of suffering families in the United States and across the world.
Perhaps the Santorums believe that they are especially favored by their god. If that is so, then to whom much is given, much is expected. If one must suffer, is it too much to hope that the suffering can be meaningful? |

I'm glad she has good health care that her parents are able to afford. I'm sad she has this horrible condition and I hope she will be ok. It is heartbreaking for any parent to have a child this sick and I do feel a great deal of sympathy for the Santorum family. I wish them all well.
But my heart also breaks for others less fortunate when it comes to being able to afford good health care. sigh. |

29. Bella has trisomy 18, a severe chromosonal disorder.
|
As one of my friends said, it is basically incompatible with life. One of my sisters carried a trisomy 18 to term. He died in childbirth, which happens with the vast majority. Those who survive childbirth usually die within a week, and the few that make it that long usually die in the first year. Bella has beaten the odds for a very long time, thanks to massive medical intervention.
I'm not trying to minimize the pain for the family and for Bella, just to put in perspective what her situation is. |
