Arizona GOP lawmaker says proposed Phoenix-Las Vegas freeway threatens U.S. sovereignty

Source: Arizona Daily Star

A Southern Arizona lawmaker thinks the United States could be on the road to losing its sovereignty if Congress funds a new highway from Phoenix to Las Vegas, or the state allows a private firm to build it.

Rep. David Stevens, R-Sierra Vista, told his colleagues they should do whatever they can to stop construction of the proposed Interstate 11. And it has nothing to do with cutting a new path through the high desert.

... "There are people at this point who want to try to make North America one country," he told colleagues. And he said that's more than just an idea.

... "I am a member of the United States of America," Stevens said. "I do not want to be a member of a North American country."

Imbeciles voting for an imbecile.

11. To this day I cringe whenever I hear the term "Reagan Democrat". There are people on this Earth

who voted 3 times for Nixon, once for Goldwater, twice for Reagan, twice for Bush Sr, once for Dole, twice for W, once for McCain and are now prepared to vote for Romney.

7. If it rains and fills up the drainage ditches along this highway and

the Republicans in the state government will think it is the Rio Grande and then Mexico will regain control of all that land south of the highway and...
Wait STOP! I'm starting to think like them, just from reading this. Duh stupid is contagious there.

10. This crap is part of the continuing "one world government conspiracy" bullshit

The RW Nuts have been freakin' out about highways for years. See for example:
http://www.humanevents.com/article.php?id=15497

Same paranoid conspiracy theory bullshit is behind their opposition to energy efficiency and sustainable development:

Tea Party Introduces ‘Wacky’ And ‘Ludicrous’ Conspiracy Bill To Shut Down Arizona Energy Efficiency Programs

Citing conspiracy theories about “a one-world order,” the Arizona Tea Party is attempting to slip a bill through the legislature that could strip programs designed to help residents in the state become more energy efficient.

The bill’s sponsor, Arizona State Senator Judy Burges, says her goal is to wipe out any environmental program administered or funded by the government to prevent “social engineering … including where we live, what we eat.”

Burges’ bill, Senate Bill 1507, is based upon an unfounded conspiracy theory about “Agenda 21,” a non-binding international plan for environmentally-sustainable development crafted by the United Nations. The plan was adopted in 1992 by 178 countries, including the United States under the George H.W. Bush administration.

13. think Pipeline?

I have heard (but cannot find a link) that this stretch of new highway from PHX to LV is intended as part of the grid necessary to serve the Canada/Mexico route to deliver CANADA TAR SANDS to refineries in US or Mexico. But more importantly, to connect to the new shipping ports being built in Mexico. There is also a move to put a big port on coast of British Columbia, Canada. So if both these happen they won't need the highway. However, there is big opposition in BC Canada to both the pipeline extension and the port plan. This link to LV was first proposed out of Texas which has the refineries but is further for export routes. p.s. the railroad line between Tucson and Phoenix has been proposed forever. It needs only a short extension into the city from where the rails turn West. 10 yrs ago there was a big media event with dignitaries riding the rails to begin the project. If Brewer cared about what's needed, she'd do this. I read that most (or 10%) of LV visitors are from AZ and 90% (or 56%) drive. They really don't NEED this toll highway, and there are already many private bus carriers to LV from PHX and Tucson. Don't trust this highway plan.

14. So, he opposes the Keystone Pipeline, I presume?

I can't even wrap my brain around the idea that a mere highway from one US state to another somehow affects our national sovereignty. Perhaps I have a weird definition of "sovereignty"
